Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Hey all! I'm new to growing and pretty much anything cannabis ;p Because of my ignorance for my first time grow I germinated 5 seeds 2 weeks ago and am now trying to figure these ladies (hopefully) out. Needless to say they are only now getting their third set of leaves and it's slow going! It's been a bumpy road and I've researched like a crazy lady but still have questions. First: Lighting was not optimal in the begining and probably still isn't. Using 4 CFL 100W daylight bulbs 6500K about 4 in from plant. The tips (1/8 in) of a few plants are tuning a light brown. Is this my lighting? My other question is some of the leaes are in a V and then some are beding down..what could this be? I don't want to feed them as I just took them out of MG yesterday and don't want to over feed. Wish I could post my pics! Any help for this chicky is greatly appreciated!!

Well 3 of my plants died :(..I really would appreciate some input!!

Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
I'd guess that the MG was the problem.
It's too hot for seedlings.
The replanting was a good move but quite stressful.
We usually love our first grow to death.
Cannabis is a weed, it thrives on neglect.
Very hard to diagnose without pictures but they sound over-watered.
Next batch, fill a container with dry soil and weigh it with your hand.
Then water to run-off and heft it again.
Remember the feel of it and use that as your watering guide.
(My memory is dodgy so I keep a pot of dry soil on-hand as a reminder.)
Not too wet, not too dry,
roots gotta breath
and that is why,
we mix da soil until it's right
with neutral PH and vermiculite.
Sorry, best I can do with the info supplied.
Suggest that you rat about in the everyt'ing link in my sig, while you wait for responses.

Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Thanks for replying! I was so sad to see 3 of my babies go today..but it makes me glad that I did start with bag seed and not better ones. I was going to get the better beans but figured (after all the reading I did) that it would be best to start with bag seed, that way if I did screw up it wouldn't be such an expensive one lol... I'm starting to think that it's either the Ph of the water (which I haven't been able to check) but I do let sit overnight, or the lights. Getting the Ph kit tonight. When I switched my lights around is when they started to bleach out...and I think your right about the MG. They def have burns on the tips from that crap. I've germinated 2 more seeds but waiting to move them into my box until I see what my bigger two are going to do. Another question I have is now that I only have 2 plants in my box are the lights going to be to much?I'm using 3 CFL 100 watt 1600 lumen 6500k. I also have a regular daylight bulb that I haven't been using because it throws way to much heat off. The plants are about 2 weeks old and only 3 inches tall and just now getting their 3rd set of leaves. I tried to make an album with pic's of them but I guess I can't even do that.

Howzit?
Folks used to let their water sit to let the Chlorine gas dissipate.
Letting your water sit overnight is counterproductive nowadays.
Very few water companies use chlorine gas.
They have switched disinfectants and most now use a compound called Chloramine.
Letting the water sit does not remove the chloramine, but does let all the dissolved air escape.
That is a bad thing.
Fortunately, Chloramine is actually beneficial for our plants, it kills pythiums and harmful bacteria.
So, fill your watering can from an aerated spigot and apply forthwith. :)
No worry about the light, those last two survivors will enjoy the elbow room.
New folks are quite limited here.
Actually, us old timers are quite limited here as well.
No Private messaging, no visitor messaging, etc.
Most of the good growers have fled to other boards.
You could google their screen names to find them if you wish.
Or, jus' settle for what you can do here. :)
Grow on,
Weezard

Thanks Weezard! Reading through your index of info helped a lot!! I sit my water out over night because of the house plants I have..they can't take the amount of flouride in our water. So it was suggested to me to let it sit out..will have to research this further..I do know that my peace lilies have done poorly since I began this and these were the flowers I read can't take the fluoride! Go figure! lol I've peeked at a few other websites but some seem....hostile to new growers..I'm more a lurker anyways lol Thanks again..

Well my 2 survivors are pretty much stasis at this point..they haven't gotten any taller and other than very slight new leave growth they're not doing any growing. I've got my first real set of fan leaves, then my second that are still skinny and four very small new leaves. That's it tho' *sigh*

Hey Growmamma! I personally think that non smokers make some of the best growers I've seen. Now, IMO, I'm the best small cabinet grower, but nobody would ever agree with me on that point :) Here is some of my advice:
Chances are the plants died due to nute burn, I experienced this with MG and an Organic MG (N) solution for early veg - Two of my favorite strains died within days, and although soil is forgiving, there wasn't much I could to do fix it fast enough, they dried up pretty quick. I haven't used ANY MG product since, and I advise against it, I know it sounds SOOOO dumb, because I've used MG for peppers, and tomatos, squash, pumpkins, and various other flowering fruits and veggies, but it was MG + MG nutes that killed my babies (I should sue, I loved my babies! *Kidding about suing*)
Now, I know your having problems with new growth, and I think I know why. You stated that your using 4 100 watt CFL's - I'm thinking you have the lights too far away from the plants (CFL's should only be a few inches away, you can see an example in my grow log) - Also, your using (4) 13 watt CFL bulbs, not 100 watt bulbs, so keep in mind, that while your lumen output is the same, the penetration is increased, while the heat is decreased, so as stated above, put those suckers right on top of your plants, just keep the leaves off the light physically and you should be fine - I don't like mine getting any closer than 1" because by the time I check again they'll be in the light.
My seedlings average 1/2" per day in 1 gallon pots with only 300 watts worth of light (and I do 8 at a time in seedling/early veg). The difference is I now have a good nutrition rotation, sealed box, and plenty of mylar :D You can see in my log 1 week old seedlings that already have 3, some 4 nodes, and showing signs of sex (pistils).
Granted I choose my genetics based on flower time, and all my strains are almost the exact same veg/flower times, so I can be a little more lax about just tossing them in a rotation.
To answer some of your other questions:
If the tips are turning brown, make sure your not using tin foil, this is the biggest noobie mistake, they will burn the plants. If your not using tin foil, and your temps are under 80 during lights on, then it's your nutes.
4" as stated above, is too far away from your plants, this will promote stretching (I have a 1 week old power bud that is 7" tall, with 2 nodes  ) That was because I was doing ventillation work and left it in the wrong chamber for about 3 days - Checked on it, and immediately had to tie it down and put it with the rest, so now when it flowers, it'll have a nice S shape main stem (won't do any damage at all, just looks weird)
From an experienced CFL guy, my BEST suggestion for veg stage lighting are the 26w phillip micro CFL's, AWESOME lumen output, moderate heat (3 bulbs in a 7" verticle space 26" wide with full insulated mylar is only 73 degrees without any of the fans or vents open during lights on) Perfect vegging temp. Your 13w's will do FINE, but for the best overball bang for the buck, I've gotta go with the phillips micros for veg - Ultratech also makes 13's and 26's you can buy in bulk, temps are a touch higher, lumens a touch lower, but these are a decent replacement for less than $3 per bulb (the phillips run about $6 per bulb).
Make sure you check out the CFL's I'm using for flower stage as well, honestly, with a 36" tall flowering chamber, WITHOUT adjustable lighting, I pull almost 75% of a full light meter from the very bottom of my cabinet, which is needless to say, very impressive. I could fill the lightbar, but I'm trying to do this first growlog to prove a point. If you read the entire log you'll see what I mean, my goal is to produce at least 6 oz perpetually (monthly) for less than 800 total into it, and with a total of 390w power pull, producing over 2250w of actual lumens, I'm well on track, my main plant already has 12 cola sites, and I'm hoping each one will be about the size of a medium sized pill bottle or about 5.5 grams each dry, plus a top cola that will hopefully weigh in around 10 grams, I'm on my way - And remember this is just one plant, in a chamber that can easily sustain 5 more this size (and I intend on proving it)
So, enough about me jacking your thread, and back to you - So far, so good, your gonna have some trial and error, don't knock yourself over the MG screwup, I think everyone does it.
I'll always post a response if your asking for help (and it hasn't been asked 5000000 times already)
Take care, and good luck!

Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Thanks low rdr- My two plants are still growing...slowly but surely lol..I put them on a feeding schedule and played with the lighting, putting the bulbs within an inch of the plants and they def look better. The new growth isn't light green so that's a good sign. Also, the brown tips haven't spread so that's good too. As far as lighting I get so lost lol I think that part of my problem may be not enough lights in there so I'm going to be fixing my setup. The only other thing I can think of is Ph. I went to get a kit and can't find one. Going to be ordering one but as of right now I've been using bottled spring water and they seem to like that. I have to say tho' I have really enjoyed my growing experience so far..who would of thought! Yeah, the MG is weird..I used it for my sweet pea and morning glories last year and my morning glories were 40 ft+!
Ghost, my set up is "ghetto fab" simply a box painted flat white with the lights hung into it..apparently I cannot post pic's yet or I def would..I'm thinking of upgrading somehow, but with 4 kids I don't have hundreds of dollars to put into this :( like I would like to!
Thanks guys!!

GM,
I love your enthusiasm, and with CFL's you can definately put together a great setup on a budget. If you give me a budget, I can help you build a box to suit your needs, you just tell me how many plants you want to do, what you can afford to spend on materials, and I'll help. My first cabinet I had just over 400 into, my 2nd, of course I got a great cabinet on sale, but total cost of the 2nd box was $100, and it'll work for flower/veg, but not both at the same time (but a $10 modification can split the cabinet with sealed lighting on both sides, but ventilation will be a pain)
I'm more than happy to assist!

Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
GM,
I understand that you have concerns that your not giving your seedlings enough light to grow - So I wanted to share with you my seedling veg stage, now my plant veg stage is just about the same, only with vertical lights instead of horizontal lights - So This is just a pic to show you that you have plenty of light for your seedlings - Now you can see that this small area is setup to be expanded for vegging, right now I'm ONLY using it for seedlings, but soon it will be pretty much for clones, have 3 additional 6500 lights, and be about 6" taller, keep in mind the plants will still be JUST AS CLOSE TO THE LIGHTS as they are now.
Hope this helps ease some of your doubts. (also included the stretched plant so you can see it)

Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Low rdr, Going to shoot you some info/set up questions tomorrow but had a question. My plants are in peat pots and I noticed that the roots are sticking out the bottom drainage hole about 1/4 inch (if that)..I keep seeing people say not to pot the peat pot when transplanting so I'm not sure what to do cause I don't want to damage the root thats coming through!! Ugh, just when I thought things were chillen out a bit lol..any input??
-
Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
In the future don't use the peat moss pots, I know why you did, I did the same thing (or attempted to) on my very first grow, it seems logical so everything has room to expand, if your not comfortable using a razor and quartering the peatmoss so you can gently pull it off without damaging the roots, go ahead and plant it. It WILL STUNT YOUR GROWTH, but the roots will eventually get through, honestly, you'd be adding 2-3 weeks to your grow if you can't get it off.
Be gentle, use a very sharp razor, and try not to nick any roots, you should be just fine. - Most of all, don't be afraid to make a mistake, that's half the fun is figuring out how to do it better!
-
Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Thanks again low rdr, got them out of the peat pots without injuring the roots (I think any ways) and I transplanted them into a 1 gallon planter..now I just have to wait and see..:)

There is so many books written here; I can't read it all. So; I will give you my .02 worth. No offense to anyone else. Try this diea.
1st thing you need to do mama; Buy a PH pen. You can find an in expensive one on ebay. Many will say buying a cheap PH pen is a joke, but at least it will get you started. Later on, you can invest in a better pen or meter.
Although many folks believe that you need to ph water from the start...this is not true. PH does not effect plants until they are big enough to have a healthy set of roots. 2 weeks to 4 weeks.
If you are going to grow plants in soil; Start them in jiffy pellets. Buy a tray and clear cover with peat pellets included. Just use what you need. Follow the directions. It will work. You can start plants in these Jiffy pellets, and not transplant until roots are penetrating the cheese cloth around the pellets. Probably 4-5 nodes on stem.
At this point. Transplant pellets/seedlings into 1 gallon pots filled with a couple layers of newspaper to hold a 1/2-1 inch of pebbles, or lava rock. (This allows drainage, and oxygen for the roots). Normally I don't recommend Miracle Grow, But! Miracle Grow, "Organic choice" Potting soil works great. You can fill your 1 gallon pots with "Organic Choice for you veg period (16-18 hours), and your plants will be healthy and happy.
This is a very simple beginners method, and I promise you will be fine. When plants are small, you only have to water every 3 days most likely. And; After you transplant into your 1 gallon pots; You "DO" need your PH @ 6.5 You can order PH down off ebay for 7-8 bucks and learn how to use it with your PH pen; Or go to auto parts store, and buy a Battery acid refill kit. don't worry; Battery acid is nothing more than Diluted Sulphuric acid and is used by commercial growers everywhere. You only need a few drops in a gallon.
Hope this helps. Will be glad to help you keep a simple grow going. if you get to 8 weeks old plants that are healthy; I will explain how to replant in 3 gallon pots without stress. Or; Go to the growfaqs area and read. Good Luck Mama. Peace

No worries, your doing fine. Remember this is backseed so you don't even know what they should look like :) Has the yellowing stopped or is it continuing to spread? Also, your going to see a BIG jump very shortly, your roots are exploring, one reason I put my riot cubes in solo cups or 1 gallon pots after they sprout is so the roots can't go too far, and the foilage keeps up with the roots. If you pull those plants up right now, even though they look so tiny, you'll find a very strong root structure, see how strong your main stems are?
These little ladies will be just find GM, your doing a good job. If your still seeing yellowing, increase your nitrogen just a bit.

Low rdr- curious how long you think I should let these gals veg for..As I really have no clue since the got such a slow start..although the difference between last week and this week is huge..they still are taking their time lol..also I wanted to see if you could give me a hand with my build and what I'll need..some one on here mentioned a program that you can use to design but for the life of me I can't remember!!! Who would of thought that come hitting 30 next week that I would be so forgetful!! ;)-
Also what seed banks would you recommend as after this bad seed I would really prefer to get better genetics!!
-
Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Well GM,
Since your not a smoker, and your growing - regardless of WHY your growing, I'd need to know what effects your looking for before I could recommend a good seed bank or distributor. My selection of strains, along with reasoning is as follows:
Durban Poison - Migraine Relief & Stomache Issues, side effects are a very conscious buzz that isn't much of a couch lock (unless its over flowered)
White Widow - Pain Relief & Appetite Inducer, side effects are a lazy feeling, limp, and relaxed - This is also good for muscle pain.
Pineapple Express - Antidepressant & Mood Stabilizer, this is my main strain for some of the conditions I suffer from, the side effects are an energetic and elevated buzz, I've also noticed that this induces motivation as well as 'higher plane' thinking. This is great for people with 'asshole syndrome' or people who don't want to be stuck on the couch.
Bubblicious - migrain relief & appetite inducer - This is a good strain when you have company over for good times.
Super Skunk - Pain Relief & Antidepressant - This is GREAT for after a long days work when you just need to unwind and relax - Chill out on the couch and watch family guy.
PowerBud - General Treatment - The strain genetics are good for a multitude of symtoms, side effects are increased appetite (munchies like hell), mild muscle relaxer with a tingly feeling at first, and sever couch lock if taken in excess. Very good yields per plant.
Super Lemon Haze - Close to pineapple express in effects, very smooth taste, great sativa yields, this does have a longer flowering time (up to 14 weeks) and has a very heady effect, ever feel like your superman? If not, this will get you there.
Khali Mist - General Treatment, Khali can be used either for THC or CBD depending on who or what its grown for, and its effects can be great on everything from nausea to sleep disorders.
Most of my strains are sativa's or mainly sativa mixes. Your indicas are more for nausea, sleep disorders, etc. I use Grand Daddy Purple to treat insomnia, nausea, stress, and if taken in excess has morphine type effects, however an overdose can make one more nauseous!
Cinderella 99 is a new strain for me, the gentics are pretty solid, and although I need personal experience with it, I'm pretty sure this will be a pain killer/nausea/appetite treatment. Remember, I do grow for medicinal purposes for my wife and I, so some of these I have to keep on hand, like the pineapple express and the GDP - We're actually dry right now, my wife has sever IBS which includes massive nausea spasms lately, and I have a high stress job, so the anti depressants and mood stabilizers keep the 'asshole syndrome' at bay, without making me feel like a zombie. Imagine curing kids ADD with a vaporizer twice a day.... We're only a few years away!
Okay - So for your plants. I would veg these guys out til about 9-12" and hopefully at least 7 nodes by then, and honestly, I'd leave them in the 1 gallon pots. Your not going to yield much, but it is bagseed, so just getting them to flower and being able to harvest is going to brighten your day. If you want to switch them over to 3 gallon to flower, you can, and it will increase the yield, but these girls don't like to be transplanted alot.
I'd like to suggest you get ahold of me personally and we'll go over budget/grow options, and I will gladly design a cabinet that will fit your needs, if you, or someone in the house is handy with tools, we can go cheaper and better :)
See the purple button under my name? That's how you contact me.

Great post low rdr...I don't know that its completely acurate tho. When I bought my White Widow seeds from Nirvana it says and I quote directly from the site "Nirvana White Widow produces a buzz that is powerful yet energizing and very social" nothing about making you lazy. God knows I dont need anymore help in that department. If it does and had I known that I wouldnt have ordered them seeds. Honestly I really want Blueberry seeds from Dutch Passion. I smoked some once that was amazing. Best shit ive ever had.
Not trying to argue with you just wondering where u got ur facts and if they are accurate. Thats the only strain I really know anything about and I noticed ur error immediately.

As far as the question about seed banks...Ive had great experience with Nirvana seed bank. Nirvanashop.com it ships from europe and I found thier seeds are a great price compared to other sites. They have alot to choose from and I would suggest that you pick feminized seeds. All the work ur doing with the bag seeds and you dont even know if they are gonna be female. Prob in 3 weeks you could put them into flowering and then less then 2 weeks you should be able to tell if they are female. I plan on ordering from herbies headshop next but they look to be a little on the pricey side.
Ive seen people talk trash about Nirvanas genetics but my girls look great. Ur plants also looked pretty healthy. You should be proud you got this far...I feel like most people dont even make it as far as you have.

When white widow is grown to maturity, and not harvested early the entire thing is just packed with CBD - If your harvesting just as the trichs are changing, you'll get the effect your looking for. Your also using Nirvana, I'm using Seedsman - They are different genetics, and my pheno might have more indica attributes than yours, I'm putting one in flower in about a month, and I'll put some pics up of her. I flower them for a full 14-15 weeks, with the last two weeks in complete darkness and give it about 2200 PPM cO2 in the final stretch. My hairs are 100% brown (not red) when I harvest, and my trichs are mostly amber. - There are only a few nirvana strains I'm a fan of, bubblicious is one of those.
Also, if you look up images of seedsman white widow vs nirvana white widow, you can definitely see a genetic difference. If this is your first experience with WW, take it easy at first, one good bong rip and give it a few minutes before you go again, this is one of those strains that can really get your head spinning if you don't take it easy, of course, different pheno than mine, so might be a different effect there as well.

If this is your first experience with WW, take it easy at first, one good bong rip and give it a few minutes before you go again, this is one of those strains that can really get your head spinning if you don't take it easy, of course, different pheno than mine, so might be a different effect there as well.
When trichomes start to turn amber; The thc is decaying. Yes, you will get a more sleepy or couchlock effect when the trichomes are predominatly amber. So,it is best to harvest this type of genetics when the trichomes are predominantly cloudy. Whebn clear trichomes are a vessel for thc. It is not until they are cloudy they actually contain the thc you are expecting in order to experience the potency you are looking for.
I agree that the earlier you harvet form clear trichomes, to partly cloudy trichomes to clear, cloudy, and amber trichomes; the more you lose the "up" high and gravitate towards sleepy time. If you wait until all trichomes or majority are amber; you have passed the ultimate potency level and will get sleepy instead of energetic.
You can buy a nice hand held pocket magnifier for about $10.00 at radio shak, or online somewhere, to look at your trichomes and determine the % of clear cloudy or ambner trichomes. This is the only way to truly judge as to when you need to flush, and harvest. There is no exact measurement in weeks to determine when to harvest.
Funny. I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure I have read low rdr say; "I harvest when trichs are mostly cloudy", And here he says, "I harvest when trichs are mostly amber". Perhaps he is making a different choice depending on strain. I always harvest when trichomes are mostly cloudy; Giving you the most potent and healthy uplifting type effect that any genetics can give.
One final note. co2 should never be applied over about 1500 ppm. And; Especially not in the final 2 weeks when you are trying to flush minerals, toxins, etc... from your plants. Plants overdosed with co2 can be harmed just as bad as if you dose them with nutrients at too high a ppm level regardless of time in grow. So; In theory; You would not fertilize or apply co2 after you start your flush period.
Hope this helps.

Need help, don't smoke but attempting to grow!
Last year; I got to talk with the guy who originally developed white Widow. black Widow is the same thing, because Both are from genetics created by 1 with another persons help. They split up, and One renamed the astrain Black Widow. Most WW strains sold are counterfiet or possibly from genetics derived from the original. I will try and find the correspondence I had, but a major forum crashed and a lot of data was lost; So, I don't know if this conversation is still stored in my Profile.
I would not suggest trying to grow White Widow from anyone until you are more experienced. It is widely known to be tough to grow.
Ak47, Skunk #1, and Blueberry by Dutch Passion are real easy to grow and are especially nice when finished properly. Another thing about these 3 strains; All 3 finish between 6-9 weeks. Might be a good idea to try and steer clear of Sativa until you are more confident in your growing, because some Sativa strains can take 12-14 weeks to finish, and you will go crazy, waiting. Peace

I agree on the PPM of Co2, I also agree that I have said I harvest when trichs are just turning cloudy - I did not define that I treat different strains in other ways. When I smoke WW, unless it's in a spliff, I can't handle much at a time when it's harvested cloudy, and I really enjoy my blunts, but blunts with a lot of cigar tobacco can have a really sickening effect, so I leave my WW for longer, which is also why I put so much Co2 into it, and I water cure my WW which is why I feed and pump co2 in until the end, to reach MY desired effect, I love this strain, but in order for me to partake in the fashion I prefer, I need to make some changes to the ending effect and flavor (via co2, darkness, and the cure) - I hope this clears a few things up.
I couldn't imagine a 5g blunt of WW harvested cloudy - I'd be up for days.
Made this bigger for you bite, hope its big enough

Thanks for the clarification. I figured as such.
Thanks for the big font. I use the magnifier in Windows to help, too. Macular Degeneration sucks.

GM-
I have had several successful closet grows, and would like to help if u have any questions. I am currently growing with 100% cfl bulbs 23 watt to 45 watt. Everyone says to keep the lights 1 to 3 inches away. from my experience, 6 inches away for vegging, and 8 to 12 inches away for flowering. With my setup, any closer would burn the leaves, or fry the bud hairsAttachment 288484
It is also important to add lighting as your plant grows and thickens up. CFLs are not good at having strong light penetration, so to maximize your harvest yield, use top and side lightAttachment 288485
any questions, I would be happy to give my 2 cents. but please remember that one persons advice may work great for them, but not so well in your situation. OR NOT. My suggestion is to get all the opinions you can on any pertinent subject. Use common sense, and do your thing. GOOD GROWING TO YOU

It might be OK.
Cannabis is tough, it can take a joke.
Just slow down on the watering. Less leaf mass = less transpiration.
No forget to thank the toddler for "thinning" the lower branches for you.
After you limit access, of course. :D
Aloha,
