Quote:
ASPEN, Colo. -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his home, his son said. He was 67.
"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.
Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.
Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time.
Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's time in Las Vegas, he is credited with pioneering New Journalism-- or "gonzo journalism"-- in which the writer made himself an essential component of the story.
An acute observer of the decadence and depravity in American life, Thompson wrote such books as "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" in 1973 and the collections "Generation of Swine" and "Songs of the Doomed." His first ever novel, "The Rum Diary," written in 1959, was first published in 1998.
Other books include "Hell's Angels" and "The Proud Highway." His most recent effort was "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness."

Rest in Peace Hunter Thompson
Born July 18, 1937, in Kentucky, Hunter Stocton Thompson served two years in the Air Force, where he was a newspaper sports editor. He later became a proud member of the National Rifle Association and almost was elected sheriff in Aspen in 1970 under the Freak Power Party banner.
Thompson's heyday came in the 1970s, when his larger-than-life persona was gobbled up by magazines. His pieces were of legendary length and so was his appetite for adventure and trouble; his purported fights with Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner were rumored in many cases to hinge on expense accounts for stories that didn't materialize.
"It was hard to say sometimes whether he was being provocative for its own sake or if he was just being drunk and stoned and irresponsible," quipped Krassner, founder of the leftist publication The Realist and co-founder of the Youth International (YIPPIE) party.

Howdy notanovice,
Not only is it cowardly..but selfish too..studies have been done, that show that those who are liberal, tend to be more suicidal..because liberalism is self-serving,and worries about what the world will do to them, each day..and how much will the world do for me today.
Recently,a liberal female proffessor, killed her baby and then herself, the immediate reaction of her liberal comrads, was to glorify her with a plaque dedicated to her life..Liberalism,is a brain-disorder..but don't worry..there's plenty of help available folks.
Disclaimer: I apologize in advance to those whom I will offend..but dealing with the truth, will speed up the process of healing.

Dear god (torog) Have some fucking respect. That post was totally and utterly off the topic. Were talking about a great writer who has died, and then you spring in with your usual fucking politics and democrat bashing. Nobody cares about your ploitical bullshit. If you have to spout your shit, then put it in the fucking p[olitics section, dont make us read it when were trying to pay our respects to somebody.
(rant over. I just get fucking sick of politics sometimes)

Why are people surprised when someone who's an artistic genuis commits suicide? Anyway, I feel bad that he felt shooting himself was the only way he could find peace. I hope he rests in peace. Hopefully, he'll be remembered for his work and not for the lame way he took himself out.

Rest in Peace Hunter Thompson
LIberalism is not a brain disorder, mr Torog. You're the one trying to poison our minds with total and utter crap. This topic is about paying our respects to an icon of the drug culture, and of literature in general. He was a great man and author, and whether he was a coward or not for committing suicide is NOT the issue.
If you're such a good Christian, pray for his soul and leave the judging to God, like he told you to.

dear kid
he didnt die.
he killed his insane himself
get it right, some of us see that as a cowardly act of selfishness.
another crazy fucker off the streets,he hurts his family(friends) and has people like you thinking how bad it was (his loss)
i wont miss him,i feel sad for his family,NOT HIM.
suicide is not like he died from desease or accident
THE IDIOT KILLED HIMSELF and you people wanna say he was special cuase you like a movie or story, shit get real here
the fucker had it made money wise, had a reputation and fame,
so i ask you
what so dam great about a dude who shoots himself in the head.
all i can say about that act is
IT WOULD BE SO EASY TO KILL ONES SELF THESE DAYS
He may have had a mental defect all his life, and never knew it.
something was too much for him to live with,
did he have terminal deseases?(not counting menatl illness)
ask yourself why would anyone kill themself,?
permanant solution to a temporary problem
suicide only hurts those around that person ,the person who kills themself seeks attention after death to punish those felt ignored them in life, moms dads sisters brothers aunts uncles cuzzins and friends
they pay the price for caring for that person, that selfish coward who runs out on life itself and hides in death
now my rant is over kid,
peace

Howdy Kid,
When he killed himself,he pissed in his cornflakes and brought un-told to his family..it's hard to respect that..I know personally, the grief that suicide brings..I had to clean my 17 year old uncle's brains off the floor and walls, when he killed himself..and I'm still haunted by that memory..which still includes the anger and grief I felt back then, in 1975..I was just 16. .and that was my first pall-bearer duty,as well. My mother still crys over the loss of her brother and just last month, was asking me what he said and did,in the weeks and days before he committed suicide..dear Lord..doesn't she deserve a break ?
I don't hate my uncle for what he did,I'm just very dissapointed in him for making such an awful decision. It's possible to honor Mr.Thompson for what he did in his life..but his method of death, should be denounced and never offered as a solution.
I'm simply trying to counsel against a mind-set,that makes excuses for bad behaviour..rather than being accountable for one's decisions..at some point-one has to 'grow up',and realize that one is accountable for all decisions..then be man or woman enough,to deal with the consequences..is that so wrong ?
Talking about this type of death,is a part of 'coming to terms with the grief',and is a critical part of the healing that needs to occur with the victims of suicide. I never got any grief counseling when my uncle killed himself, things didn't seem to matter much, and I sunk deeper into drugs, weed and alcohol, dropped out of school and wound up with a GED..and that was just the impact on me-his nephew. His sister, just one month older than me,had to see his terribly mutilated body, she dropped out of school and got into even more trouble than I..so forgive me for being so cold earlier..but I reacted with an old anger and sadness.
Have a good one....

This is a tough topic... but I too am going to side with Nowhere Man and Torog... the man shot himself in the head.... that is cowardly and pathetic... I just recently saw Fear and Loathing for the first time last week... and I'm not sure whether to think the film is a masterpiece or a genuine piece of shit.... but I do respect what he did in that film.... but it still doesn't make me feel sad for him that he is dead.... i feel bad for his family cause of what he did to them by committing suicide.

Howdy FLESH,
Suicide does become the issue,if by your praise of the man, someone else thinks that it's okay to commit suicide, because one will be praised and not criticized.
I ain't supposed to tell you this, but I have prayed for Mr.Thompson and his family, and for God to have mercy on his soul.
Try and have a good one.....

For fuck sake, he was over 50, how is it the easy way out if hes lived most of his life?
Stop being fucking hypocrits, show some fucking respect, its his choice to end his life. I (personaly) dont want to live beyond 40, but thast me, stop saynig hes taken the easy way out when hes had a fuller fucking life than you.

Thomspon, Hemmingway, Plath, Sexton...
All of these people have many things in common: they were great writers: they were troubled souls: they killed themselves. While I understand the point that Torog makes about personal responsibility, I do believe that one should be allowed to terminate their own life. I would argue that their death could well serve as a lesson for others, not as a signpost for other like minded individuals. BTW, the logic you employ in your comment, "...if by your praise of the man, someone else thinks that it's okay to commit suicide, because one will be praised and not criticized." is amazingly boneheaded, and does not really stand up to your other arguments; you might want to rethink that.

I hate everyone here who has to drag religion and politics into something so pure and sacred as death. Death, it was around WAY the fuck before politics and according to my beliefs it was also there before religion.
So why do you people in you're non-stop quest for conversion and altruism just chill out for a bit and respect Hunter S. Thomson for being a person who wasn't afraid to express himself or his point of views through his novels. Because he's dead and calling him weak and a coward are the least respectful things you can do to someone whos life has just been ended, it shows me alot about your character and how weak you muct be to demean others inorder to somehow raise yourself up a peg or to make yourself feel big.
This goes not just for your unjustified hatred of Mr. Thomson but also for liberals. Your little quip about Liberalism being a brain disorder is quite self contradictory of your own mental state but I don't expect you to understand that because from your point of view you're absolute and godlike in your truness. Well All I have to say is have fun in hell because if you're correct about religion then thats where you'll be going.
P.S. Don't get me started on the whole conservative smoking pot thing either...

Not that they deserve it, by any means...all I'm saying is that genius is often balanced out with insanity. Whatever his reasons, RIP, and let's all hope suicide never touches any of us.

Howdy spiritualized1,
I don't think that my comment was boneheaded at all..society is constantly agonizing over the effect that glorification of bad behaviour and choices, will have on those who are impressionable, for one reason or another.
I believe that Life is a gift from God..and we are in for the duration-to end it prematurely,is an insult to God..that is merely my belief. I'm in constant, chronic pain and cannot do many of the things I used to do,nor many of the things I like to do,I live under the poverty line,I barely own much more than the clothes on my back..a lesser man-would have considered suicide already and I've been advised that someone in my position,is at a high risk for chronic depression..rather than commit suicide..I'm profoundly grateful to God,for every precious moment..I don't have time to wallow in my own self-pity.
Have a good one....

I don't think my cat will ever forgive me naming him Hemmingway instead of Hemingway. At least Coltrane wasn't named Coletrain: he, at least, can hold his head high. ;)

Yeah, it was a good movie. In fact, there's another of movie made about Hunter Thompson, the one with Bill Murray. Anyway, I read his books, read his articles, and truly considered him a cool human being who I would put on my list of ppl I'd want to smoke with. Watching Fear and Loathing will never be the same again, especially with Hunter Thompson's commentary on.
