My Root building routine...What do you think of it?
Ok, Gang..
I like to force my seedlings to reach stretch for the water...so I will open up the rapid rooter and move the seedling down to its first set of leaves..I like to let them grow about a 1/2" or so and do it again...I will continue to do this till its just the right height...you will see what I mean as you keep doing this....I cut out the circle of plastic to let the rapid rooter sit right and the tap root can extend with no problems...it takes a couple of trys sometimes to get the rapid rooter situated like I like but its well worth it in the long run as the roots just keep on getting longer and bigger...
Give me your thoughts, if you would...
Thanks,
Treetops
Peace

If you slide the roots down, you're likely breaking off the finer roots that come off of the tap root, and attach themselves to the plug, aren't you?

Morning Rusty,
Thanks for checking this out.I actually open up the split rapid rooter and move it done...I know there is some harm done but its minimal and I try to be as careful as possible but I do realize the small root hairs do get broken off, the plant doesnt seem to be affected for the most part.....and I am getting a small compact plant, with the majority of its roots being developed ahead of its upward growth..especially since many of us grow in small cabinets..
If one has a stretched young seedling, in dirt dont we all just repot it right up to the first set of leaves? I'm doing the same thing, but in a rapid rooter, and making the young root reach for the water..
Your thoughts please..
Thanks,
Treetops

Those feeder roots (and their tips) are needed to uptake nutrients and moisture. I'd just be leery of unnecessarily tearing those teeny tiny roots, especially on a plant so young.
Perhaps the other surviving roots can make up for the defecit, I guess I'm saying I'd just be leery of opening it up to the light and air at all, but if it's working...
If you ever get to wondering if it's effective, a side-by-side could save you shitloads of time in the long run. Or did you already try that?
Also, I'm really not one to talk about caring for your roots, lol.
Keep in mind this was a mature plant. But I butchered the canopy and roots, lost my heater, (which killed all but this plant, and one other) but she came back strong.

Evening Rusty,
I agree with you in regards to the tearing of the roots...and in that regard I am most careful..most times no roots are torn...they will pull out of the rapid rooter...I have done it to all my grows, with what I call nice grows...but it was bag seed except for my Hawaiian Snow which was 14.5gms.. I am still learning and experimenting...This Sour Jack was done that way....My goal is to grow a compact plant, but a forced matured one...with a mighty robust root system...
Nice job on the your girls return even like you said, with your butchering...
Thanks,
Peace..

Just thought I'd show you all, what my kids..the SJs look like as its been awhile..:) I think my method matures the plants roots, which in turn matures the plant, making it more mature and low to the ground..giving it more head room to bud..I am a rookie grower, just trying to try something that I dont see too often discussed...Just flipped to 12/12...gonna be a full bedroom as they are all taking off now....
Thanks for looking...

So hopefully the plants will be that more robust in the small closets we grow in...which in turn gives us more buds...

interesting expierment. I'll be watching this for my own personal knownledge on future grows. I'm a fairly new grower too.
Good idea to play with. Thanks for the log.

Hey all,
Update on the Sour Jack...it has done exactly as I wanted it to do..be a relatively short stocky plant.
It is filling out very nicely as well...
All in all so far so good...
Thanks for stopping by...:D

How much room do the roots have in that res? Do they ever outgrow that?

Tree, you experiment TOO fuckin' much ... does NATURE move her plants up and down in the soil, etc to 'build roots' ?? ... gets harder and harder to figure out your problems, when ya keep changing the grow methods ... you need to get a hobby, my friend :D
-
My Root building routine...What do you think of it?
Nature also doesn't inject the plant through hydroponics either but it seems to be the ticket. I agree though in saying that it will be hard to determine a problem though. maybe doing side by side comparisons might be better and take the nest method as your standard. That is if you have the room.
-
My Root building routine...What do you think of it?
Oh, and nice roots!
-
My Root building routine...What do you think of it?
hydroponics does not 'inject' anything into the plants, it only provides a readily-available source of nutrients, so the roots don't have to go searching ... the plant will only absorb and use what it is capable of ... I'm just too 'old-school', I guess ... I had it pounded into me, that ya never expose the roots to light, ya just don't fool with the roots ... STRESS ... let's compare: 'my old-fashioned way' = almost all females, (rare for me to get a male), no diseases, never killed a plant ... 'your experimental ways' = lots of males, sick plants, and one just mysteriously died ... nothing wrong with experimenting (we all do it), but 90% of the time, the experiments only serve to feed your curiosity, and do nothing for the plants ... plants prefer to grow 'naturally' ... as I often preach, "imitate Nature" ... :smokin:
-
My Root building routine...What do you think of it?
I didn't mean inject in the literal sense.;)
most have to expose the roots to change thier dwc res. I try temporarily store them in a dark place while doing that in another room.

Reaper,
Remember I have only been growing steadily since I retired in Oct 05...
I cant say my 3 males were a result of my ways...just the luck of the draw as out of 5 THUNK seeds 3 were females,1 died, 1 male.. and I am doing things the way I always do.....my plant dieing, thats another story...I think I explained what may have happened there as well...with it sinking down into the water of the container more than it should have...Who knows for sure...but I am prepared as I have a bigger bucket if it starts looking like the NCDG did...
We all try "imitate Nature" in our closets...to try and grow the best plants we can in our self made environments...thats why I tried to make my plants develope a robust root system, instead of wasting time in growing taller, why not increase the root mass which will develop in my thoughts better bud(s) and sites..as well as a shorter and stockier plant to accomadate the small cabinets/closets we grow them in...
Peace,
Treetops

My Root building routine...What do you think of it?
just so no readers will get the wrong idea, Treetops and I are good friends :D ... we 'agree to disagree' all the time, but it doesn't matter, because we both get results :weedpoke:... plus, we're both wornout old geezers :S2:

Hey Gang,
Here is a pic of the Sour Jack..she is 25" tall...49 days in flower..Just found the yard stick...made it easier...
Yes, Reaper and I are the best of geezers..and do agree to disagree, even though our growing and methods sometimes take us in different directions..all is well...
This is what I would think we closet growers should be striving for...small compact, sturdy plants that will provide us with a nice harvest...We will see soon enough..
Peace,
Treetops

Hey all,
65 days today..She is filling out but is not quite ready as yet...too few amber at this time...not really a smell to put a liking too...I'm in no hurry as the NCDG just gets better each day..:D

wow.. that plant is the poster child for a healthy plant. Great work, she's beautiful.
edit: actually I did see some burn on the tips, but considering you're 65 days into flower your plant is in perfect health and looks gorgeous. I'm jealous

Thanks Reaper...wont be much longer...but quality takes patience and time..got plenty of it...

daihashi,
Thanks for the kind words...taking a pic outside the box, makes a hell of a difference...she does have some yellowing of the lower fan leaves, but I'm sure thats part of the flowering process...Fox Farm nutes all the way...no superthrive with nutes either..
I'm not rushing her either..no amber as yet to speak of, so a while longer she'll go...quality not quantity is what I'm striving for...
I have got lots of time and patience...
Thanks,
Peace,
