Are weed smokers really peace loving hippies?

I was down at my local head shop this weekend and couldn't help noticing that almost half of the paraphernalia for sale was covered in either: 'CND' symbols, or 'Hippie' type 'peace and love' imagery.

"Not that there is anything wrong in being a hippie", some of my best friends are tree huggers, and I always was in favour of a bit of 'free love'.

But, is this what the average stoner is really about these days, or is it just a tired old cliche that manufacturers assume is going to help sell their products.

Would a 'CND' logo on a grinder (for instance) make you more or less likely to buy it?

Just a stereotype. It's like saying all those who drink beer are wife beating maniacs. weed is smoked by people from all walks of life. One of my firends is actually a right-wing conservative, and even he likes to smoke a bit of pot now and again.

I agree, a stereotype. It's probably done because the hippies are credited with starting the whole weed scene in the 60's.

We know it was smoked years earlier, but mainstream media still associates it with the counter culture movement.

A total stereotype.......none of my mates are hippies and they almost all of them smoke. :thumbsup:

No, but I find people who smoke will be more on the hipiesh side of things. Not actual hippies, but still like peace, are very chill, don't flow with the "in" crowd. People nowadays who smoke are also more likely to be interested in hippie culture. I am. The only violent pot smokers I could think of are those stupid gangsta ass muthafuggas who just want to try to prove how tough they are.

If you think about it 90% of the things you buy are going to be marketed a certain way to make people buy them. But I don't care. I like that way hippie style shit looks. If I had to choose between a tie-die bong with a peace sign on it, or a bong with maybe flames or something like that; I'd take the tie-die.

I wear a tye-dyed Aerosmith t-shirt a LOT, and then there's my UPS shirt that my lady just hates (you know, United Pot Smokers).

Last time I was in a head shop (last week) a VERY OLDER woman came in and bought a "stone" and a glass pipe. God bless her!

As far as I'm concerned hippies were a phenomena of the cultural and social changes of the 1960's and (in Aus at least) the 1970's. I'm one of 8 children raised by a self identifying hippy of that time and an anarchist of Irish extraction. My father lived his political beliefs quietly and earned a respectable income that allowed my mother pursue her passion her social justice and generally run amok.

As a child I marched in the moratorium rallies holding the hands of my younger siblings, camped on the lawns of parliament house and was forced to drink fortifying milkshakes made from brewers yeast on winter mornings. My siblings and I went where ever my mother did, it was all part of our education. I went to open air rock concerts, sit ins and protest rallies and missed a lot of school.

Footwear and underwear was discouraged at home, nudity (semi nudity as we grew older and more modest) was the norm in warm weather. Prior to 12 years old, I didn't wear underwear at all, unless I was going to school or away to play at the homes of more conventional families.

We were encouraged to explore and experiment with the natural world, but also taught to respect the intrinsic value of all forms of life. Both my parents shunned any suggestion of monotheism, yet let us make up our own minds on the nature of the world.

Our neighbours hated us quietly, we were very noisy and were never admonished for foul language because my mother believed that words should not have power over the people who speak them. There was no shock value in swearing for us, but we probably caused our more conservative neighbours fairly continuous discomfort.

We had a huge veggie garden, dad brewed beer and made wine. Neither of them smoked dope because dad grew up on a sugar cane farm and had very set views about the appropriate uses for hemp. Mum would have loved to get her hands on some and during my teens, would ask my friends if they could supply. They usually thought she was testing them, she wasn't.

That's hippies to me.

I absolutely loathe the commercialisation of cannabis paraphernalia with 'hippy' logos, or the consumption of tie dyed clothing, soft environmentalism, or the eclectic approach to borrowing bits of other people's cultures, I see today as being related to the concept 'hippy'.

I find that most people who smoke weed tend to be a bit more open minded and slightly more intelligent then most. As a result of that we tend to shy away from base violent desires and attempt to solve our problems with talking rather thing fighting. But overall...thats just a stereotype.

I dont think I have ever met a hippie.....or at least the kind you see on movies.But I know alot of guys who smoke that are peaceful.

i think hippies give weed smokers a bad name, i dont want people to assume im a barefoot, dirt poor, tree hugging, tie dye wearing, not shaving, long haired, burnt out person thats only concerned with sitting in drum circles bashing the govt but being to scared to do anything about it. The whole hippie scene is terribly overrated

besides hippies were in the past, anyone that wants to be a modern day hippie should go live in a special compound in the middle of the desert. Havent you guys seen Easy Rider???, Thats what a real hippie should be like.

CND stands for 'Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament', very popular in the 80's. 'Ban the Bomb' and all that stuff.

Well im certainly not a peace loving hippie.

There was only one real hippie, and that was Emmett Grogan, founder of the Diggers in Haight Ashbury, San Francisco, CA.

im not a hippie if by that you mean the tie dye clothes and the vinyl classic rock sleeves all over ones' walls type of hippie. i am pretty peaceful though sure and i make a conscious effort to not be a complete doosh rocket to everyone i come across. but i do like metal and ultra-violent video games...

im too young to really understand the 'hippie' mindset. sure ive seen a few history channel miniseries and my moms brother followed 'the dead' around the country to over 300 shows so hes got some great stories, but im sure factually im way off =P

i do wish people were less callous towards one another. i feel so sad when i see people be mean just for the sake of being mean, which is like every day =/
im guilty of it too though i suppose. everyone gets frustrated. but i try to acknowledge my anger... like just today at work i caught myself pissed and calmed myself down pretty fast. then i just felt bad, but then proud! proud that i didnt flip out and add unnecessarily to an already stressful situation. aaaand now, ill take a nap :D

What's wrong with peace? Yes, I have become a pacifist. Before I smoked ganja, I was not. Is there something wrong with that? Hippie? Can anyone give an accurate definition of what a "hippie" is?

I love peace, I promote it, but I do not consider myself a 'hippie' simply because I was not alive when the original era took place... I'm a peace-loving lifelong learner, with a shitload of bumper stickers on my car, a dance in my step; my eyes drawn to the sky, and my feet traveling the earth :)

I was alive when the original hippie era happened, although I was a little kid. I consider myself to possess a hippie soul. I'm a pacifist. An environmentalist. I advocate freedom of lifestyle choices and legalization of cannabis. I'm politically liberal. I'm spiritual rather than formally religious. On the surface, I look more like a yuppie soccer mom, so some people are very surprised when I reveal my social beliefs, which, I suppose, were molded by my academic, beatnik-era parents.

OK here's how I see the whole thing. You go into a head shop and there are racks of tie-dyes, Grateful Dead posters and peace sign bongs. It's a stereotype. I saw The Dead and it was a great show. Doesn't make me a Dead Head. I'm anti-war. (I fought in a war so I feel I have a right to that opinion) That doesn't make me a hippie. I disagree with the government. That doesn't make me an anarchist. When I buy a piece it isn't going to be adorned with a dancing bear. I like to smoke pot. That doesn't make me a loser. I have a job and I go to school full time. I go to the American Legion and listen to the old timers talk about how marijuana is bad and I try to help them understand that they have been misinformed. Hippies were a group of like minded people who were looking for a better way. For some of them they found it. Others fell back into society and managed to live productive lives. What I don't get is some 18 year old kid growing dreads and wearing dyes claiming they are a hippie while driving their dad's BMW to Grateful Dead tribute band concerts at $50 a clip and proclaiming themselves a hippie.

Peace and love are cool and all, especially if it can get you laid, but that is not me.

The hippie ideas failed. It is a total media generated stereotype that pot smokers are hippies.

i would agree. I don't think that hippies are bad, i just think its bad when people think everyone who smokes weed is a hippie, which i'm sure you all know is not the case. I don't think that stereotypes for pot smokers are that bad anymore. I think that people who don't smoke understand that its something we enjoy, just like w.e they do in their spare time. It's true for me. I love love, I love peace, and I hug trees on a regular basis. I also like furry woodland creatures. I shop local, buy organic, and like to quote Gandhi and his ilk.

Call me a hippie if you must, but I like to think of it as being God-fearing and principled.

I work in a food co-op. I'm a vegetarian. I try to only eat organic.

I do believe that Marijuana has helped reach this state of being that I am in..I see what I have learned in the way of peace and harmony and it has passed on 2 both my daughters, so in an inadvertant way they have both benifited also:hippy:

Over here in England i'd say that about 50% of smokers are aged 12 to 21, wear burberry caps, tuck their tracky bottoms into their socks, wear fake gold earrings and would steal your shoelaces if they had half the chance. I dont go near them due to the fear of catching Stupid Dickhead's Disease. The only time they hug trees is when they are trying to gnaw the bark off so that they dont have to waste money on toilet paper.
