First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Finally built up enough funds to start. Im usually very busy so cut me some slack when I comes to the replies and updates. But I promise this will be the first thread I visit when I logon.
Also, this is a poormans grow, your gonna see alot of corners cut, this is really just a proof of concept for my so I can get a feel for it and trust myself with some better equiptment next time around.
Heres the setup so far.
For lighting I have 2 45watt warm whites, and 4 23watt 6500k's. This is for veg only, I will increase the light power dramatically with the coming of flower.
As of now I have no timer so its 24 hour lighting, this is next on my list of purchases.
Using organic potting soil with about 33.3% perlite.
All seeds are bag seeds collected from all kinds of different strains, mixed em up and picked out 10 seeds.
These ten went into a cup of water to soak over night.
All but one sank. After filtering the seeds out of the water I lost one to the blimey deep. The other 9 went into the paper towel process, most popped over night, a couple took an extra day. I was left with 6 viable and 3 non compliant seeds. Threw the 6 in my party cups and here we are today...
As of now I have no fans in there, the temps stay between 70 and 77, I will add a fan for some air flow later.
First signs of growth.

Is it ok to remove a seed shell or should I just let it be?

They are stretching a bit, need to move the lights closer. My light hanging device is basically nylon pull string I grabbed from work. Its a bit difficult to raise and lower accurately. I may have to buy those little yoyo devices, ive only seen them online tho, anybody seen them at HD or Lowes? Heres a pic of the ladies(hopefully>_<)
And I did held that seed shell to fall off, looks like the back right corner needs it done also.

Try not to touch it with your skin if you do take it off. Just blow on it a little to see if you can get it to come off. If it doesn't fall off I usually leave it.
The plant will take care of those kinds of things itsself. No need to over work yourself...

First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
They look ok so far. Just as EXP13 said, the plants will usually take care of those things. However, I did have one situation where one plant just refused to release and it died in the seed shell. Weird kinda. It got to about an inch high with the seed still attached.

Not much has changed, actually gave em a full on water instead of just spritzing. I really need to get a fan on them soon, need to strengthen the stalk. My perlite is turning yellow, why? Temps are steady about 77ยบ, pretty good without a fan, and thats with the thermometer in with the plants.
That spot on the bottom right corner with the messy leaf was from the seed shell that I removed...shouldnt have touched it cause the other one fell right off. >_<
I know its a little blurry...deal with it.

See. If you fuck with mother nature she will fuck with you. lol. :wtf:
Nah, they look perfectly fine. Not sure exactly why your perlite is turning yellow. Mine usually doesn't. Occasionally it does but I think it's simply the dirt staining them with what ever nutrient stains the perlite I'd presume...

More of the same...
Ive noticed that they are very flimsy and will fall over when you water them? Is that normal, im sure they dont have very much root growth, and im also using 24/0 so theres not dark period to kick the root growth into full swing. They lookin droopy to you guys? Do you absolutely need a fan on them even if the temps are nominal? Because im starting to find out that fans are a seasonal item...as in nobody carries any during the winter, only the heater fans. Thanks to those who have been stopping by and looking, might be a long weekend so dont expect me till monday!

they do look a little droopy. Are you sure you have good drainage from those cups. Maybe the soil isn't drying out enough before you water it next.
As far as your fan problem, I know a fan blowing on your plants can help increase the stalk strength. I just bought a couple of fans recently. I got mine at target. They're right next to the space heaters. At least they were in my town.

My soil has excellent drainage, too good I think, thats why the little seedling will topple over if I pour water in there. Good lookin out havent tried target yet, I usually dont support the french.

Indeed.
However, I think I'm seeing some kind of discoloration of your leaves. Could be a bad thing.
Post some more pictures.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Yeah there does look to be some discoloration. Maybe from gettin some water on the leaves, its still growing at the same pace as the rest. Could it be the metalic pan they are sitting in reflecting back underneath? Who knows...
I talked to a friend of mine at work, hes currently growing some type of blueberry skunk strain. He said I could have as many clones as I wanted but I think until I get better equipted I will stick to my bagseed, its a better suprise in the end, cause you really have no idea what strain it is. Anyways, heres what you've come for.

You cant really see any discoloration with the naked eye, atleast not my eyes.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
It appears to me as if you're overwatering just a little.
They look very healthy but are showing a few tell-tale signs of being a little swamped. I'd cut back on the watering by about 1 day.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Santa, Your plants look very healthy. If I may give some humble yet unsolicited advice, consider trimming the top of your cup a little. I don't know if its just because of the pictures, but your plants seem a little deep in the cup; not too deep where any damage is being done though.
I get discoloration on some of my leaves because i get water on them every now and then. Its nothing that I would worry about too much, unless you splash your plants. sometimes light burn can be really stressful to the girls.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Thanks for the input guys. It would probally help if I got an actual watering can, instead of my spray bottle minus the sprayer. ;)
I think the overwatering is the inital cause of my flimsy seedlings as the roots havent needed to grow and search for water, im gonna stave em for a bit. Whats the most common way of telling when you need to transplant? I have some 4gal pots and I have some that are somewhere inbetween the cups and the 4gal. Should I step up when its time or go strait to the big pots?
So far they all look similar to me, can you more experienced guys seen any differences, or is it too early?

Gah, friggin weather. Well, in my attemp to somewhat starve my plants I accidently burned the shit outta them. With the weather being in the 40-50's my closet was staying 70-75. All of the sudden we have a 80 degree day and my room was probally at about 90 for sometime, and with the lack of water...gah
Temps are now stable and gave em a good water. We'll see what I can salvage.

Get about 1500ppm of CO2 on a timed release in there with good ventillation, and your plants should be able to withstand at most 95 degrees.

Do they make time release valves? Say I had a 20 ounce c02 bottle for my paintball gun, can I retrofit something? How long would it last?

Ok, so heres some pics of the damage. Should I remove the damaged foliage or just let it fall off? It looks like they should recover, I really hate myself for burning them. It suprised me how fast it actually happened. I checked em before I went to work, then when I came home...burnt...
Oh well, we'll see how fast they recover.
When do you know its time to transplant?

I found it just fine, though I do admit the link that used to be on the main forums pages was very convenient.

I've read that you should cut them off as they are just wasting the plants energy, but I am no expert. I had some leaves that were extremely burned on my first set of plants (which failed miserably), I cut off the first set of yellow leaves and it started sprouting new leaves like a day after, about 4 new leaves.
That's my expierence which is very limited; next to none. Hopefully someone awesome will come in and give you a definite answer. Just thought I'd give you some input.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Ever since FIMing the growth has stunted, im not sure weather its rootbound or its the stress of the cut.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
You just cropped the tops, so just give 'em a few days to adjust.
I usually FIM the plants at 5th-6th node if not higher.

Thanks for the translation, lol. Within a couple days I plan on moving them into some pots that are about 2.5x the size, veg for about a week maybe, then flower. Males will die, females into 4 gallon buckets. Thats the plan atleast.
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Santa, the girls will love the 4 gallon buckets that will be plenty of room to move around and spread their roots out.
Just a random thought, but have you considered bud enhancers. It is from my own personal experience that the girls get really hunger, and really thirsty around week two of actual flower. I would suggest getting your ducks in a row if you will, regarding what nutes you will use, and such.
one more question Santa, are you PH'ing your water?
-
First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
Looking good Santa, they will love the new pots. give them a few days then growth will take off.
BTW. Merry Christmas !!

First REAL grow, cfl's start to finish, bagseed
First day of flowering, I know ive been neglecting my grow a bit so therefore neglecting my grow log. Im glad its a new year and the holidays are over, time for a fresh'n. Smoked a bowl and heres a few pics. They are now in bigger pots, a couple have some cheap ass soil which sucks, but seems to be working ok. I kinda had to repot in phases due to money issues and having no soil, that explains the abnormally large plant, even though one of the others has surpassed in height but not bushyness. And for the record no, I do not PH my water, I know this in itself if a huge down fall, but I wanna see how many corners I can cut. Im also using some decent MG ferts the basics, half strength. No signs of it doing anything except good. Question, when the preflowers start to show, will they show closer to the top of the plant before the bottom, or visa versa due to the bottom actually being older? Heres a couple pics, hopefully the big one turns out to be female, its been the best taken care of, im hoping for atleast 3 outta 6 to be female.
