You know...I was going to make a thread like this a while ago when I was seeing all these lame rapper threads and 'underground' threads. I like the way you see things...most of the guys you named are what hip-hop is all about. Not that political theory underground nonsense [don't get mad] or that Dipset or Wayne or Jeezy bullshit [not that I don't enjoy some of their shit, but they're laughable compared to the best].
Jay, Nas, Em, BIG, Pac, Jada, Styles, Outkast, Talib, Common, Big L, Pun, Rakim, KRS, Meth, Red, Rest of Wu, Scarface, Old Cube & Dre [& NWA], Old Snoop...that is the definition of hip-hop to me...among a few others.
Of course I LOVE a bunch of other guys, and a good amount of underground, but the overall quality just doesn't compare. It doesn't come close.

Here it is...one of the most creative, imaginative songs of all time in any genre of music. Especially from a guy that dropped out of school in 8th grade...now THIS is a GENIUS at wok.

Might as well throw this on there as well. I think it is one of the greatest songs in the history of music. You have to listen from start to finish though. The whole song is a personification metaphor, and listen to the detail, foreshadowing in the first two verses that finally brings us to a storyline in the last verse that leads to a climax ending.

While we are at it...more hip-hop classics and masterpieces.
Jay-Z - Dead Presidents, Part 1. I like 2 better personally, but they are honestly both ridiculous. Also, notice the Nas sample.

Part 2.
[YOUTUBE]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8chOBTleZ8[/YOUTUBE]
One of my favorite, and in my opinion one of Em's best. Shit is deep and relatable.
Eminem - Rock Bottom

I KNOW you LOVE to DISAGREE with ME, but I was TALKING to the hip-hop LOVERS...MAYBE I shouldn't HAVE said ANY genre...SORRY.
And I WAS talking about LYRICS when I said creativity and imagination...which YES is comparable to anyBODY else in the MUSIC industry. It's just like OTHER music...one guy WRITES the songs, and the others do THE music. I don't sEe why THAT is so hard to unDERstand.
Sorry FOR exaggerating your FORUM writing STYLE.

Hahaha my good man, did you know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit?
You never mentioned lyrics at all, which is why I brought it up....sorry I don't read minds. And more so, it's so not comparable when the group doesn't have a single person playing an actual instrument...just someone spittin' rhymes while someone else plays with a simple beat. There's music, and then there's hip hop. :D

The Real Hip-Hop Appreciation thread. Why even come in? Your a clown.
Maybe actually listen to "I Gave You Power" before saying something [second one].
I think it's funny that people judge others based on...text? I don't do that to you, why do it to me? I love all kinds of shit...rock, r & b, reggae, alternative. I just have a true love for hip-hop...sorry I'm not up to par with you. If you actually knew me, you'd see there is nothing 'wigger' to be seen. I like hip-hop so I'm a wigger? What the fuck? That's a new one. A bit of a racial angle don't you think?
I know talking to you normally isn't going to work well, since you have nothing but immature comments on this site, but I will try. You have to realize that the atmosphere in which one is brought up directly influences one's self, and it reflects. Meaning, [sorry to judge], I'm guessing you are from a small town, predominately white...maybe not even a black person in sight? Well of course you might not like hip-hop or 'colored folks', but you gotta keep that shit to yourself. I'm from the city, where there is every kind of folk possible, so I see things from a different light. I don't judge based on race, music interest, occupation, or any of that shit. Basically, I'm not a prejudice, ignorant, naive, close-minded little fuck. Cheers.

Wow, Plant...I can definitely see you and Suhl being friends [not a nice thing so say, I know]. Don't play an instrument? Ever heard of Dr. Dre? A simple beat...considering it uses the same instruments that a rock band does and many many more?
Check out my post in this thread...it should take you right to it, but it's #35 if not. It's unfortunate, because I DO try to like you and sometimes even back away when you think you're right to avoid a shitshow, but it's just so hard when you're just like those clowns in that thread...but I'm done, it's just like cannabis...when people are naive and ignorant, they will always be, and nothing will change their minds.

LOL yeah dude I've seen that thread....that's the thing though man...you always have to be right or prove someone wrong when, this time included, it's not the same.
Playing the guitar and making an arrangement of notes on the computer is not the same thing, bottom line. Don't get me wrong, every now and then I like me some rap, but dude, to say that I'M naive and ignorant is almost laughable. POT calling the kettle black doncha think??
I would say more but I'd be breaking the rules here lol...clowns eh??? Look in the mirror my friend. ;)

The Real Hip-Hop Appreciation Thread
Saying hip-hop is talentless is like saying cannabis is the most dangerous drug in the world. It's not opinion, it's just wrong. I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong, I'm trying to show them the truth, because what they said was incorrect and inaccurate. I happen to enjoy when someone points me in the right direction on a topic, but some people get pretty uptight about it.
Just like with the weed, you try to 'prove people right'. You love weed, so you don't want everyone thinking it's bad for you and society...so you give them information that shows them they are wrong...just like what I did with hip-hop...it's something I love.
It's hard to distinguish personality on this site, but I always honestly thought you and I would get along in real life...because there is NO single person that I don't get along with in real life. White, black, blue...everyone. It's unfortunate to see some people aren't like that.
"Look in the mirror, my Caucasian friend"...that says a lot about you.
And sorry to Joe about the high-jack, but back on track from here on out.

And all of that novel that you typed up would have been relevant HAD I said hip hop has no talent...it takes talent for sure, just not the same type of talent as say a jam band or any other band. You have a nasty habit of easily getting offended and putting words in my mouth, no? :(
I'm not so much knocking on hip hop as I am on the fact that you hold it higher than any other form of music, all the while clinging to it as you are also perched on that cloud of knowledge looking down on us. That's all.
Like I said, I'll easily bang to some Gheto Boys now and then because YEAH, my mind's playin' tricks on me. haha. But I mean I don't really take it seriously to a certain extent.
I wouldn't take EVERYTHING I say so seriously or look into it too much though....Take it with a grain of salt if you wish.

Rappers are comparable to singers that write their own songs, in my mind. And the simple beat is generally a function of hip hop, not a limitation.

I agree, if you actually mean that they're different types of talent, not one being superior over the other. Of course they're both different types of talent. Most guitarists can't rap, does that mean they're less skilled, in general, than rappers? No, they just have different types of skill. Your viewpoint seems to be, and correct me if I'm wrong, that someone plays an instrument is somehow musically better than someone who doesn't. But the voice is an instrument, and each one is unique. Choosing the instruments and styles you like best are just tastes, nothing more.
I know you're just having fun with your arguments, but in a subject that is completely subjective (as all art is), being in an appreciation thread, I'll defend hip hop.

I won't get involved in this battle, but I will at my:twocents:
There is a lot of garbage music in all genres. I just wanted to gently point out that not considering the voice-box as an instrument would necessarily exclude a lot of great musicians in every genre (rock, reggae, opera, jazz, blues, and hip-hop...). Vocalists are musicians too. Aceyalone of Freestyle Fellowship, for instance, is creative to the extreme, and I could not use language off the top of my head in such a rhythmic and meaningful way like he does--and nobody can, and nobody ever will. Then there are artist like K'naan who are great and have serious stories to tell, and stuff from when we were kids like Eric B. and Rakim...
Programmed beats and live jams are kind of like Golf & Tennis. They are two different sports. I do not really enjoy ten minute Dead songs in the car, but I do at home...just like I tend not to listen to as many beats and rhymes at home, opting for more Jazz and Reggae.
I could sit in with a jam band on guitar, however, and do just fine. Different people have different skills. That does not mean that one is better than the other. True freestyle rap is no different than a jamband, or a jug band, or a rock band, or a singer songwriter. Different genres just have different timbres and different emotional responses for different listeners...but Jay-Z, and Young Jeezy and 50 cent and eminem and all this other for-the-$$-tripe is garbage, I agree. Good art is always about the intention and soul behind the artist. If it is honest and true to its creator, it is creative.:)
