International Cannagraphic Magazine Forums - breeding hermies???

hey bear, these are two of the better articles/threads that i've found that have info about sex reversal. i'm hoping to find a good, solid answer soon, i wanted to breed with the dreamgoddes, but i need to know for sure that this male hermie is not a bad thing. it just sounds too weird to be true, but then again, so does a male that starts to grow pistils two weeks after it starts dropping pollen...and, it's growing trichs on the fan leaves too, i mean a LOT of trichs!

I read threw both of them and not really any concise answers IMO and with the way that people throw the theory around you would think that there was much more info on it.
Well, I am off to do my own research, may take a while, but I will be back with something hopefully.
One thing to really consider is that when trying to breed with plants which are showing these kinds of traits you are subjecting your self to allot of work for one particular plant that may need to be carry on for many breedings to stabilize the plant in order for it to be as productive and healthy as many others you may already have. In the process of committing to this plant you may spend allot of time and energy that you could put in some other areas that may bring you much more gratification and productivity. I only say this to help you keep things in perspective, because I know that sometimes when we start on a question/project we can become tunnel vision and not consider the implications of the indever.

Well, for starters, a thought I had was somewhat confirmed here as I was thinking that there is not much difference in male and female hermies, "An hermaphrodite, or hermie, is a

plant will develop staminate flowers, though the reverse is also true. Primarily male hermaphrodites are not as well recognized only because few
growers let their males reach a point of flowering where the pistillate would be expressed.

Hermaphrodites are generally viewed with disfavor. First, they will release pollen and ruin a sinsemelia crop, pollinating themselves and all of the
other females in the room. Second, the resulting seeds are worthless, because hermaphrodite parents tend to pass on the tendency to their offspring.

Here is another peace that does make an interesting clame that levels of THC can be increased when a male plant go's and has a reverse, but it may only be comparing it to a female plant which has turned hermie and there for has a lower THC factor and not comparing it to a healthy MJ plant, also it isn't addressing the offspring of the male hermie from what I can tell.
"Abnormal sexual expression includes a whole range of possibilities. Individual flowers may form abnormally, and may contain varying degrees of both male
and female flower parts. For instance, a male flower may bear a stigma; or an anther may protrude from the bracts of a female flower. Abnormally formed
flowers are not often seen on healthy plants, although if one looks hard enough, a few may be found in most crops. When many of the flowers are abnormal,
an improper photoperiod (coupled with poor health) is the most likely cause. Abnormal flowers sometimes form on marijuana grown out of season, such as
with winter or spring crops grown under natural light.

Intersexes and Reversals Much more common than abnormally formed flowers is for the plant's sex to be confused. One may find an isolated male flower or
two; or there may be many clusters of male flowers on an otherwise female plant, or vice versa. These plants are called intersexes (also hermaphrodites
or monoecious plants). Intersexes due to environment causes differ from natural hermaphrodite in having random distributions and proportions of male and
female flowers. In more extreme cases, a plant may completely reverse sex. For example, a female may flowers normally for several weeks, then put forth
new, sparse growth, typical of the male, on which male flowers develop. The complete reversal from male flowering to female flowering also happens.

All other things being equal, the potency of intersexes and reversed plants is usually less than that of normal plants. If there are reversals or intersexes,
both of the sexes will usually be affected. Female plants that reverse to male flowering show the biggest decline. Not only is the grass less potent, but
the amount of marijuana harvested from male flowers is negligible compared to the amount of marijuana that can be harvested from a normal female. Plants
that change from male to female flowering usually increase their potency, because of the growth of female flower bracts with their higher concentration
of resin. Female flowers on male plants seldom form as thickly or vigorously as on a normal female. Between the loss in potency and the loss in yield because
of females changing to males, a crop from such plants is usually inferior, in both yield and potency, to one from normal plants.

Environmental Effects

Many environmental factors can cause intersexes and sexual reversals. These include photoperiod, low light intensity, applications of ultraviolet light,
low temperatures, mutilation or severe pruning, nutrient imbalances or deficiencies, senescence (old age), and applications of various chemicals (see bibliography
on sex determination)."

Here is a bottom line thought IMO, "Hermies cause problems because they usually carry the hermaphrodite trait with their offspring. Genetically the hermie condition is near impossible to reverse
once started. Sometimes even plants from the hermaphrodite's offspring that did not display the hermaphrodite condition can still carry the hermie trait
to future offspring. If you ever see all-female seeds advertised by seed banks you have the right to know whether or not these seeds come from female plants
that were stressed into producing male flowers. In general, growers try to avoid hermie plants because they spoil sinsemilla crops and breeding projects."
Marijuana


Here is the technique that I explained earlier about fem seeds from bananas, "Rodelization: Soma's Method" "
A male banana is a very slight male flower on a female marijuana plant that is formed because of stress. Usually they do not let out any pollen early enough
to make seeds, but they sometimes do. They are a built-in safety factor so that in case of severe conditions, the plant can make sure the species is furthered.

To me, a male banana is quite a beautiful thing. It has the potential of making all female seeds. Many growers out there have male-banana phobia. They see
one and have heart palpitations, they want to cut down the entire crop, or at the very least take tweezers and pluck the little yellow emergency devices
out. I call them "emergency devices" because they emerge at times of stress.

In the Rodelization method, the male banana is very valuable. After growing your female plants 10-14 days longer than usual, hang them up to dry, then carefully
take them off the drying lines and inspect for bananas. Each and every banana should be removed, and placed in a small bag labeled very accurately. These
sealed bags can be placed in the fridge for one or two months and still remain potent.

For the next phase, you need to have a separate crop that’s already 2 1/2 weeks into flowering. Take your sealed bags of pollen out of the fridge, and proceed
to impregnate your new crop of females. To do this, you must first match the female plant and the pollen from the same strain in the previous crop.

Shut all the fans in the growroom down. Then take a very fine paintbrush, dip it in the bag of pollen, and paint it on the female flower. Do this to each
different strain you have growing together. I have done it with up to 10 different kinds in the same room with great success.

I use the lower flowers to make seeds, leaving the top colas seedless for smoking. This method takes time (two crops), but is completely organic, and lets
you have great-quality smoke at the same time you make your female seeds. If you’re one of those growers who’s never grown seeds for fear of not having
something good to smoke, you will love this method.

You can also use this pollen to make new female crosses by cross-pollinating. The older females with the male bananas can be brought into the room with
the younger, unpollinated females after they are three weeks into flowering. Turn all of the circulation fans on high, and the little bits of pollen will
proceed to make it around the room.

Do this for several days. Six to seven weeks later, you will have ripe 100% feminized seeds; not nearly as many as a male plant would make, but enough to
start over somewhere else with the same genetics.

As a farmer who has been forced to move his genetics far away from where they started, I know very well the value of seeds."

In summery, a few things to think about. 1. Female and male hermies are similar in offspring tendencies to become hermy in a high ratio.
2. Hermy traits may not show up in the direct off spring, but still pass the hermy trait on making for an unstable strain IMO.
3. Any Hermy offspring's in a grow room can cause more problems than they are worth, damaging other crops/projects and waiting time/energy, which are very valuable on my list.
4. stabilizing in strains and offspring should be a priority IMO when all is said and done in your breeding practices or plant vigor, productability, stability and a host of the little minutia can be compromised IMO.
5. The practice of making fem seeds is widely excepted and a safe and healthy way IMO to make fem seeds and preserve a strain in seed form threw back breeding and in/crossbreeding or what ever you would like to call it.
Well, Little lady, I hope that this can give you a few answers that may help you to make your decision a little easier.
One other thing, hemp cultivation and MJ cultivation do have differences which really do cause the botanist breeding applications to be on separate grounds IMO.
