Amsterdam trips??

I've been saving my money for a long while now trying to save up money to go to Amsterdam, and by the fall I believe I'll be heading over to stay there for a good vacation. What I'm looking for is people who have gone, go often, or are in the know about places to go/things to do/things NOT to do/places you get ripped off/places that are great/etc. Curious about hotels/prices/money needed solely for transportation/et al. Any kind of advice would be great, or any kind of information. I just want to make sure when I do go, it will be the best time.
