How the heck can I move out?

I gotta say I've been in a pretty bad fuckin' mood today, and this is one thing that's particularily not helping. Canadian members might know a little more about what to do with this situation, but all suggestions are welcome.


Anyway, I'm 21 years old and still living with my parents. I really wish I didn't, in fact I wanted to move out years ago, but it seems like I'm stuck here. I've been in a shit load of pain through most of my body since I was 16 (spinal nerve damage), and hence every job I've tried to work, even part time, I've had to drop because the pain got worse and worse every day of work till it was unbearable. Mind you I have no degree's so it's all (near) minimum-wage stuff where I'm on my feet all the time, which I just can't do.

Right now I'm working through school with the end goal of becoming a pharmacist. I'll probably work up to neurology after I get there, but one plan at a time. I won't be finished school till my late 20's, so getting my pharmacology degree is no plan to get me out at a reasonable time either.
I'd go live on a student loan, but the government here has this stupid-ass policy that I have to have lived on my own for 2 years before they'll give me a living allowance.

So here I am, 21 years old and living with my parents. Can't work, can't live on a student loan, and I don't know any other way of somehow moving out. I don't know, any ideas?

hmm... does canada have disability checks like the us does? if so i'd start there... it'll probably be a long trecherous battle, but if your pain is as bad as you say it is, and your doctors can back you up, eventually you'll get it...

could always go to college to become a webpage designer or something... one of those comfy-chaired jobs where you sit on your ass all day in front of a computer.... (i dunno about up there, but pharmasists are always on their feet down here... so i'm not so sure that would even help you out...)

start researching for real work-at home type jobs... there's a whole lot of bullshit out there, but there are some programs that are real, and do work... you just gotta find the right one (if you send money to them first, then no, don't do it... just another scheme)

could go to one of those carrer schools to become any number of things, one being medical billing...

there's lots of things you can do, you just gotta figure out what suits your needs, and what will work for you.

I'm also in Canada and living with the folks.

I don't have the same hurdles that you have so I don't know if I'd have any good advice. Sounds like you have a good idea of where you want to be though.

One quick question though, do your parents mind you living with them? Like are they going to boot you out soon?

I've thought of that, but again it's the catch-22; if you live with you parents, you can't get disability because they're supporting you. If you want to move out of your parents house, you need disability.... Honestly I don't know how anybody who was disabled as a kid manages to move out.

I notice the pharmacists here both sit and stand, depending on what work they're doing. I imagine though that my employer could make such a small accomodation, and if I was making a pharmacist's wage I would finally have enough money for therapy to keep the pain under control. As it is I can afford to see the chiropractor, massage therapist, or physiotherapist maybe once every 2 months. My parents thankfully pay for my meds (tramadol, flexeril, and celebrix), though I wish the docs would give me something that actually does more than a half-assed job of killing the pain.

I had no idea any legitimate ones actually existed. Maybe I'll take a look at that, but I would be terrible at telemarketing and just overall hate it, if that's the kind of thing those are.

You mean like a 1-2 semester skills-training program? That's not a bad idea, I just hope there's enough of those types of jobs where you can work in a chair.

No, they're not going to boot me because they know I'm stuck, and they've seen how painfull it gets for me just when we go shopping and it takes more than 20-30 minutes. But I can't mooch off them forever and I'm not enjoying it right now.

web design is EASY... lol i taught myself to do it in a matter of a couple of weeks... i mean i could really benifit from some actual training, but mostly it's just a bunch of typing... (aside from the actual design part) and everything you would ever need to even know is on the web, and more than easy to find...

as for the disability, i didn't think of that :( that's gay actually... i guess they want you to overcome whatever ails you and support yourself, then you are qualified to get it? doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.. i mean shit if youc ould do that, you wouldn't need the disability in the first place! :mad:

and yes that's exactly what i'm talking about, they take next to no time (when compared to college) and most of the programs even have employers constantly getting names/refrences of their students to hire them directly after their training is done... it's a very large field, with plenty of chairs open.. you just gotta be able to go to the school.. that's the only real 'downside'... if you got the money (or can get the scholarship) it's definately probably the best alternative you have in front of you right now..

work-at home programs... yeah, there's not a whole lot of them, and may be next to impossible to find them, but they do exist...on a side note you can get fed for free (fast food mostly, only downside there) by being a 'mystery shopper' basicly, you eat at a place, (but you pay) and give an anonymous review of it, along with proof you actually did (reciept?) and they reimburse you for what you spent... something along those lines...

Web design on the professional level is not too bad once you get the hang of it and take some classes, but it's not really as *easy* as slip says. He might be a web prodigy..

I'm actually thinking of going into a multimedia web-type career, like with Flash. I''ve been taking a few classes here and there on my way to a Bachelor's in graphic design, and lately it's sparked my interest. Some of the stuff you can do really is awesome.

Good luck mr devious, and I'm sure you'll find a solution soon. Living with your parents is DEFINITELY more nerve-racking than I'd like it to be :mad:, so I know why you want to move out. ~

compared to every other job o.0 web design is easy... well for the coding part i mean (of course, design, means art, which takes a certain skill) i mean damn, if you got half a brain, you can do it :p i wouldn't be the first to call me a web prodigy, probably the last actually.. but who knows, maybe i am.
