Right now I'm in the process of curing my plants, and I bought a nice big jar this weekend to put everything into. Right now there's about 3/4 of an ounce in the jar, and the jar is only 50% full. Through reading various posts on various sites, I'm gathering that I may want to use a smaller jar so that I can pack it 85-90% full as this might help the buds sweat out that remaining moisture a little better. Should I go for the smaller jar/s, or am I fine putting them in the big one?
Well in larger jars you do have a bit more room for error.
What I mean by that is you will see signs of moisture in a jar with a bit more room then a jar that is tight. The moisture will rise to the top and form as drops on the side of the jar.
Personaly I prefer a jar that is not over 80% full anyway so you are good to go as far as I am concerned.
What others say about tight packing the jar.....well just think about my logic and you decide.
There is no proof one way or the other that I know of.
We fill about 75%. This way there is still some air in there to dry the buds out a tiny bit more but there is also enough room so that we arent packing the buds in there and rupturing the trichromes...which of course is a no no! Some jars of the same size fit twice as much because when we do our big buds, there is more void space then with a bunch of small buds.
I would also suggest jars with very large tops! This enables you to easily pick out buds without having to deal with the whole "hand in the pickle jar" deal. Less damage = thc lasting longer.
Standard practice is to let the buds breath every day or so for a little bit in order to avoid mold. This all depends on how early you put the buds into curing. I do it when the lower buds snap off the branch but the top buds are not quite "snappy". This equals out in the jar pretty good and doesnt require so much breathing. But to each his own.
I have a couple of these wide mason jars that hold about 3 lb of spaghetti. Maybe 64 oz? I stick stem and all in them jars.
I use 10-12 oz Polaners jelly jars (wide mouth) for smaller buds. They have a great smell in 'em and the glass art is cool.
