Need a little advice

i have a 6 year old girl and she has had speech problems ever since she could talk but now she is getting old enough to notice that she dosent say words right like top is dop and thats one of the easy ones other than that she is perfectly normal but the other day she was doin home work and was having problems with her spelling words and she started crying and then she said "i cant say words right and i dont know why i try but i cant say them" and she was so upset i felt so bad but theres nothing more i can do she is in speech and we are actively working on the problem and have been for years but its a slow road and i dont really know what to do other than console her and help as much as possable i was wondering if any body had any suggestions or simmular experances

I know several smart people who were slow to develop in this area as children but have no difficulty today. They were a little late to talk and had difficulties in pronunciation and spelling. With practice and development they eventually turned into perfect speakers. One continued to have minor spelling difficulties early on in school; another overcompensated and became an expert speller.

I'm no doctor (or parent) and there are other serious medical conditions, but if she is okay in other areas, then I think she will be fine in a few more years. It sounds like you are doing great.

Keep up the practice of speech and spelling, love, and positive encouragement. Make sure she knows she is okay and intelligent. :)

You may know about it, but there are several books and articles on late talking in children and the so-called "Einstein Syndrome". [Albert Einstein was a late talker (age 9 according to Wikipedia).] Although I am unsure if this condition is related to your daughter or to those I know, it may be helpful information. I've only read a few reviews, but there are several books and articles out there.

I would let her know that all people have different voices, just like all birds have different songs, and we all know that if the only birds that sang in the forest were the ones that "could" the forest would be an aweful quite place.;) who wants a forest full of birds that all sound alike?

Let her know that her voice is beautiful the way it is, but if she wants to try and change any part of it she doesnt like you will be there to help her along.

thanks guys i reall like the bird song idea and she talks alot but she has a had time saying words correctly other than that she can even spell words she cant pronounce lol thanks for the replies i will try them all and i will check out that book i have heard alot about it but i think its time i read it lol

I really like the bird metaphor a lot. It's sweet and is precisely the sort of comparison/explanation she'll understand and enjoy.

Are you and her mom making sure you're breaking down the syllables of troublesome words and practicing them with her? That extra reinforcement will help what she's working on in speech therapy, and if you incorporate that, say, as part of the process of your reading together, she'll just interpret that as quality time with you guys, which she'll love on lots of levels. I had some trouble with saying words correctly when I was small. It's a very common problem and one they usually grow out of. There were some speech pathologists at my school who helped a time or two, and then my dad, who's a linguistics professor, decided he could do a better job and he apparently did because the problem resolved itself.

my sister had speech problem but it was stuttering with her words but that was when she was age 3-5 shes 8 now and shes grown out of it occasionaly shed stutter but she talks just normal sooo she grew out of it my mom said she used to have speech problems to when she was younger so did my uncle but they all talk perfectly normal now so i think she wud grow out of it soon she shud be talking better.

It's heartbreaking isn't it. My son had a speach problem up until he turned 9 or so, and it really effected him. I remember one time inparticular when he was around 5, he said a word and I tried to correct him, he immediately placed his finger in on his teeth in shame. It actually made me cry, lol! That stuff is hard on a kid, (and parent) but get him in speach therapy, don't make a big deal out of it, and it 'should' pass in time. If I rember correctly, Albert Einstien had difficulty speaking properly when he was young, too, or so I've been told.

Sometimes my son still has trouble saying words correctly, but he doesn't notice so much, and I'm used to it. He's a happy ten year old boy now. The speach problems get better, and so does thier attitude about it. That's been my experience, anyway...

Don't woory so much; things have a way of working out, and kids are tougher than we realize. Yours will be fine. :thumbsup:

Get her to a speech therapist- I don't know about your school, but even the small, rural one I work in has a part-time speech therapist. Has your daughter's hearing been tested? I used to work with deaf kids and one of the least deaf girls (she didn't even wear a hearing aid) would "miss" her "t"s. "Stop" came out "sop" and beginning "t"s were sometimes replaced with "d"s.
