The "M" Word

The "M" word (marijuana) is a ploy used by early 20th century lawmakers to denounce the evils of Cannabis; Marijuana used as a slang term by the Mexicans was used in place of Cannabis, as it sounded 'evil' and 'immoral' and is still seen as an evil word by many against it.

Cannabis sounds like a friendly Latin-ized plant

Pot sounds like a casual street name

Weed sounds like, well, it's a bothersome weed

And Marijuana sounds like the government shying away from it.

I don't like to call it marijuana, and I scarcely use the term weed, for medical discussions I use cannaibs, and other times, it's just pot.

What do YOU call it?

I wanted to add to your story a little bit. The US government started to refer to cannabis (or hemp as it was also known) as marijuana prior to it's prohibition. The US citizens didn't know what marijuana was; all they knew was that it caused something called "reefer madness". So when the government wanted to make marijuana illegal, the public went for it. Only after that happened, did the people find out what was really going on.

Anyways, I use the word cannabis when I am talking about it in a more formal, or medical sense. Informally I use bud, weed, or marijuana. I also like saying the word reefer. lol.

but i usually call it bud, but ive never liked any of the names for mary you wanna, i still cant think of one i like so ill have to make one up

I never use the word Marijuana - sort of to make a point. I'm happy to shout down those that do.

It's the same with words like handicap - Mental health professional can get a bit uppity about it as it as (they think) it is supposed to be a reference to begging or some other derogatory term.

The history of the meaning of words or etymology is a fun subject IMHO.

But Marijuana is just fucking racist so I won't say it :)

Anyone know what marijuana translates to in spanish? All of the mexicans that I grew up around called it "mota"

I only use marijuana when I type. Most of the time I just call it weed lol. But if the name doesn't originate from some one that was against it then I don't care how the word makes other feels. Just like I don't care how the N word makes others feel. This is my body and I'll say and do what ever I want if I want to. No one owns me so no one can judge me.

I hate the word Marijuana.

On here i'll refer to it as cannabis, but i call it skunk most of the time.

In England cannabis only refers to the hash, or soap. The government and Tv and newpapers all call it herbal cannabis or skunk.
