Bowl piece questions
I have a glass funnel that I took from my chemistry lab and it fits PERFECTLY into my bong.
I cleaned it out real good since it came from a chemistry lab and its been touched by some nasty chemicals.
It says KIMAX 58 USA on the side
everytime I apply the flame from a lighter to the surface of the glass, a black film begins to cover the glass, and a string odor resembling burnt plastic is emmited. Is this odor coming from some protective coating or something or is this normal for glass, my regular bong piece does not do this, and I want to make sure it is 100% safe to use this before I try it.
thanks

I would suggest not using it, I have never had that happen, but than again I have never smoked out of equipment from a science lab. I can't help, but from what you described, I would suggest you not smoke out of something that is emmiting fumes.

just dont' use it... doesn't sound safe at all... couple of things that come to mind is coating, which you wouldn't wanna risk, or chemicals that won't come off (obviously as you said you cleaned it really well) or it's actually made out of some type of hybrid plastic or something....
i just wouldn't use it.

Bowl piece questions
does the black wipe away or does it stay burned? i probably wouldnt trust it. it could be a glass plastic hybrid or could have a clear coating or something. may just plain out be not the type of glass that can withstand the heat or something. try cleaning it with alcohol or something and burn it again and see if does that same thing. if anything....better to not use and be safe instead of using it and may being sorry...

even if it wiped away i still wouldn't use it... unless and only unless it didn't come back when burned again.

I did some search, same glass as pyrex I guess, I will have to do some more searching.
Yes a black film developes where the heat touches the glass, and the film wipes away pretty easily with a paper towerl.

I have used a test tube type container as a vaporizer, it definitely was glass because I eventually dropped it. It made the same type of black spots when I heated it. I wasn't especially worried because I was heating the outside but it probably was some type of film, or perhaps the gas and other chemicals from the flame are accumalating on this type of glass.
The film reminds me of the blackness that sometimes accumulates on glass candle holders. I have always figured a chemical in the wax caused this, but I'm not sure. I'd do more research or find another use for it other than a bowl.

use it, the black is carbon from the lighter. everything you put over a lighter will turn black. i can do it to my skin without burning myself.
i beleive the glass in unpenatrable with chemicals, so as long as its sterilized it will be 100% safe.
