Completely white plant

In an issue of HT from somewhere between July95 and August96(I think it's the issue with either Jerry Garcia or Kurt Cobain on the cover) there was a picture of an mj plant that was completely white. It was a reader submitted photo and the reader claimed to have mutated some seeds to get the white plant. If I remember correctly they said they didn't smoke it until it had gone through severeal generations to make sure there was no trace of the substance(mildy radioactive?) they used to mutate the seed.

My memory isn't the best so I'm sure that I got at least some of the above info wrong.

Is there anything online about this process or any other record of it? Since I've never been able to find any info on it I've wondered if this all just a figment of my imagination. Or was it some reader just trying to fool everyone with a bunch o lies?

Any and all info appreciated.

Can't say I've seen that, but... it doesn't really sound plausible since plants kinda need chlorophyll for photosynthesis. I don't think an 'albino' plant could survive at all, though I'm no botanist. Sounds like a hoax, IMHO.

My thoughts exactly, but like you I'm no botanist and I figured the folks at HT had access to botanists who must have had some reason for thinking it could be possible. Probably a very stupid assumption on my part

my biggest fear is that someone goes through every issue from 95-96 and it turns out that I somehow dreamt up this whole thing :o :rasta: :o

You will eventually see partial albino plants if you grow long enough. It's not uncommon.

Hoax to the max! No chlorophyll = a dead plant. Unless they fixed up an intraveneous (intraphloemous? Phloem are the plant's veins)) drip on the plant, it would die. No two ways about it! Chlorphyll makes the food for the plant (don't they show "Our Mr. Sun" anymore in grade school?) and like all living things plants need food. I call HOAX!!!

What is the science behind this. a white plant isn't absorbing much. Thats why it's white. right?

I remeber definitely thinking the guy was a scientist if his claims and explanation(i think it was extensive) was real. Someones got to have the magazines from that time period.

If that mutation were possible, the plant would be black, not white. White reflects all wavelengths, it doesn't absorb them. So, white chlorophyll would be very inefficient I'd imagine.

remember we're talking 1995/96...photoshop wasn't in anyway commonplace back then. And it was mostly likely a developed image on photopaper that was mailed to HT, and not an image that was emailed. I'm damn near ready to shell out the $$$ to get the back issues just see how it was explained
