If your asking if you can use a 1000w light on a 400 ballast, the answer is no. If your asking if you can use the 1000w bulb in a certain hood, if it fits than generally yes you can.
Hope I understood your question right.

I have a Econo Cool Reflector and a Galaxy 400watt electronic ballast with a 400watt HPS blub.If I was to get a 1000 watt ballast and blub, could I use the same reflector?I have seen sockets that say {5KV} &{4KV} on them. What dose that mean? Some of the light mfg.list the lights at diffident prices.and was wondering if there is a big diffidents in say a 400 watt shade and a 1000 watt shade. Thanks angain
The real differents is in the measurements of the shade, bigger shade equals more coverage, and some that say air cooled aren't completely enclosed and some don't come with the glass and as for a 1000K bulb fitting in your hood, I believe that if your lamp is long enough to hold the HPS bulb you shouldn't have any problems, the only thing I would take care to check is if the socket on the 1000k ballast kit has 4 screw holes or 2 because your hood may have a 2 holed socket holder where you may have to drill holes to make another ssocket fitt properly.
Others may have more experience, so maybe get some more opinions.
