in all the pictures i see there are rocks in the pots on top of the soil in a circle

Those are hydroton pebbles. Puffed clay.
1. Provides a medium for the roots to grow in. (In hydro.)
2. Helps maintain a good air/water ratio.
3.Slows evaporation of water.
4. Prevents mold.
5. Probably other stuff I can't think of. I'm high too. ;)

Is that why I haven't seen you around the thread, roadcam/TIR? Cuz you are offended by my hydroton pebbles? :( :( Remember, some of us are not able to work with soil in our particular situations. :D
