I thought Stanley Kubrick was overrated. I found so much of his stuff to be contrivedly strange. Like it showed how he was deliberately doing strange things rather than letting art happen that coincidentally happened to be weird.
My favorites are Sidney Pollack, Clint Eastwood, Ang Lee and, I think, Robert Redford. All four of them can just take your breath away with their breathtaking visuals and, at the same time, the subtlety of their films.

Quentin Tarantino ...
i love tarrantinos kinda retro-cool thing,
i also like tim burtons darkly enchanting style,
but the award for "outstanding achivement in the field of excellence" has to go to ( as much as i hate to say it ) stephen spielburg, if you look at his filmography on the IMDB site, theres pretty much no competition.
Orsen Welles (well, at least just Citizen Kane). Stanley Krubrick is not overated either. Things in his films that many consider wierd are there for a purpose. You don't realize the scope are magesty of his films until you get to know the back story. Every detail is significant in some way. Gus Van Sant is also a very good director, as is Tim Burton.

Worthy to mention, although their portfolio is much smaller are David Lynch, Clint Eastwood, Q Tarantino, David Cronenberg and David Fincher.
P.S. I'm no film student .... but Kubrick was a genius IMO. 2001, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, .... just forgive him for Eyes Wide Shut ... ....
