I've read that as a general rule fast growing and stretching plants are usually boys whereas slow growing compact little plants are usually girls. Anybody found this to hold up?

not always true but normally if one plant towers over the next it usually is a male, out of two of my plants the bigger one was male but my plants have zero stretch the nodes are very tight together so its hard to say sometimes
In my experience, of a group of plants given identical conditions, I have found the males to have leggier growth with less development of side shoots.
