10'x15' Grow Room. What would you do? Tracks?
hi. I am moving to a new place in a couple months and I am starting to get everything gathered up. I have done a couple little operations in a small 6x6 room and had relatively good results. However I also had the direct help of a very knowledgable friend. I am on my own now with another friend who has grow experience but nothing huge either. I would just like a few opinions. Ive researched many similar questions, but I feel each situation warrants a different answer so Im askin.
Here is the scenario. I will have a garage, that is 17x20 feet. I have a 10x15area to actually grow with. I do not like messing around and would like to do a SOG/ScrOG. I would like to take advantage of this full grow space. I understand this is a serious project but we are ready to take it on. Ive been around some similar setups as well. First and second times around will be soil. If everything goes well, we would like to dabble back into hydro. I had some issues with water tempature and root rot before, so Im slightly sour.
Instead of building a box, we are partitioning the space into 3 areas. Front area by the garage door, 10x15 grow area, and the back area where the door and washer/dryer sit. There is only 1 window, which we have the choice of being inside the grow room or in the W/D partition outside the grow room. I am not entirely sure how well my venting plan will work, but the area we will be living in stays fairly cool and breezy since its near the ocean. We are also not too worried about hearing an exhaust fan from outside, more about the sucking of intake. There is ample space between the house and the neighbor.
My plan was to take fresh new air from the front area near the garage door. If we deadbolt the garage door open just 0.5", enough to break the seal, there is significent cold air coming in. 2 inbound fans into the room, then multiple oscillating fans inside, and then most likely one one exhaust through a carbon filter. I also have a CO2 already. I figure that if we have only 2 1000watt lights traveling an area, there will not be a huge amount of heat; especially if we can find a way to route the ducting for the lights so it doesnt inhibit track movement.
Finally, we will have an extra 10x10 room available as well. Once the garage grow room is full and ready to bloom, we will move all mothers and new clones to the extra room and run a few lower powered lights and fluros for the babies.
Specific Questions.
-Would 2 1000watt HPS on tracks be able to cover a SOG in a 10x15 area?
-Would my cooling system theoreticaly work?
-I would like a target of about 125-150 plants, is that feasible with the lighting solution I mentioned? Sounds like a bad light/plant ratio but Ive been told tracks are somewhat similar to having 4 1000watt lights.
-Is there a better way to draw in air or mask the sound of air intaking? Im not worried about exhaust, more worried about the sucking sound of incoming air. The garage door is about 12 feet from the sidewalk, but its not a busy neighborhood.
-The garage is essentially a rectangle with an extra addition for the washer/dryer; would you setup your room the same way? I would like significent room up front by the door for long term storage (wont be accessing it often) and cover The wall will be painted black on the outside and covered with shelves and crap.
-Finally, what strains would you guys suggest for quick yield? Due to a medical condition I have access to many many different strains. I have access to some mothers but I dont like the notion of pulling clones of a mother that was pulled off another clone.
Thank you so much. Sorry for the incredible length. Even if no one responds, it was great to once again get it on paper and see it in front. We are very detailed oriented and Im not afraid to ask questions and take criticism.

well imo I would not leave the garage door up I would bring in all the cold air through the window and exhaust through the roof via a whirly bird or a gable mount fan. 2nd I do not think 2 1000w lights are enough to properly cover that area, with tracks the biggest I would go is a 6' track which will give you 8' of coverage since the lamp hangs in the middle and sticks out a foot on either side so that gives you an 8x8 space maybe streched to a 10x10 at the most personallyI would have at least 4 stationary light in a 10 x 10 but that just me have them on opposite ends from each other for better coverage

Yes I forgot to mention that there is a room above the garage (the other grow room) and I cannot go through the roof. My only places to draw air are the garage door, the window, and the sidedoor (window and sidedoor are next to each other). There will be a fullsize wall protecting the entire grow room from view, although the garage door will never be opened anyways. Good to know about the lights though...
I already have 2 1000 watt lights. I was hoping this could cover a larger area but optimistic I guess. I dont want to starve the plants for life. However Im a little concerned about the energy consumption of over 5000 watts (4x1000, 1x600, 1x400, plus fluros (the latter 3 being for the grow room)). Does anyone think this will be a problem? I dont have a problem paying bills on time, but it will be a hefty bill I expect? There will only be 2 people living there, its a 4 bedroom. All bulbs will be swapped for halogen. I plan to only keep my server computer running 24/7, other ones Ill turn on/off.
Then again, I guess I know people that run 6 1000 watt lights and never had an issue. Seems a little sketch to me.

you won't have an issue all together I run at least 10,000 watts for my entire house growing and living. My last bill was $1115 but normally around $800. I use to have a $600 bill in 2 bedroom apt for like 3 years, now I am in a house so I cranked it up a bit. I have never had a problem just pay the bill. About the ventalation cut a hole in the wall or the door and put a vent in just fix it when you move out.

Well looks like Ill just have to pick up another pair of 1000s. Craigslist rocks!! I got my last 2 hps 1000s for $300/pair. Almost brand new.
Would you guys attempt 150 plants with 4x1000 watts? Thats about 25watts/plant. A little low for my liking but not bad. With some tracks, what would 4x1000 watt lights simulate in light output (theoretical of course)? If we have 6 foot rails for a pair of 1000 watt lights, how much will this extend the growing area without sacrificing much yield?
I have about $1500 to work with. I still need a fair amount of stuff.
- 2 more HPS lights = $300
- 4 pairs of yoyos = $80
- 4 centrifugal fans = $300
- Associated ducting = $50
- RO Water = $200
- Assorted building materials (wood, drywall, paint, etc) = $250
- Fluros for clones = $200
- Matierals for cloning machine = $150
- Donation to friend for 150 clones = $100-$150 and small part of crop
- Carbon Filter = $100
- Self-made odor control = $50
- Light Rail Tracks (if we decide to do that) = $350 for 2
Aside from how well tracks work, Im also unsure of what to use to hold the soil. I was planning on packing long 6" pots together but after seeing Tramble's planter box, I am very intrigued by its cost and simplicity. Although it would be much more difficult to remove a plant if it had a specific problem or something and cleanup sounds difficult. Not that that is a big concern, I have some very nice root cutting saws.
