Maybe it has to do with the way the glass is blown? I dunno, I'm not a blower myself :D, but just an idea.
Its Art,The blowers call those "Marbles" They add a bit of color,usually opposing colors of the bowl,some contrast, and a bit of texture:D :D

yeah, i know some people who blow glass, and they call them "bubbles" and i guess they help with holding the pipe and moving, but also lots for decoration!
I would agree with those who say it has a multitude of uses. I use the one on my smaller pipe to help grip, but the one on my larger pipe just seems to be for decoration, as it's on the very end.
u guys are dumb, its to grip the bowl, the bubble doesnt get hot.
