are those PH probes that you stick into the soil reliable? Are they worth getting, or is there another method that is preferred to test soil PH?

Liquid indicator or a real pH electrode to test runoff.
yeah u can get liquid indicators from walmart around 5 bucks or so....
Dude i have one cost like 10$ and its a killer...it takes like a minute or so to get a propper readin but it reads soil and liquid so....if u cant afford a digi one thats the way to go...imo
the stick type ph meters do work well, accuracy is fair, a $300 ph-pen is way better, but like OV says the $10 meter will work for you.
I bought one of them soil jobbies for a fiver from eBay. Works well, as long as you have some sort of indication to the pH then thats all you need when you first start. If you want to really get into the pH stuff, then buy a decent soil probe and a liquid testing one aswell. The liquid ones cost about £40-£50 from what Ive seen.
