why continue buying seeds?
newb question here but i always see guys on here who have ordered the same strain or two several times from a seedbank, my question is why?
wouldnt it be better to just let a male and female pollenate so that you have all the seeds you could ever want fromn that particular strain and spend the money trying out new strains?
am i missing something? do seeds lose their potency or something?

People continue buying seeds because it's their choice. It could be a security issue. But if you dont wanna keep buying seeds then start cloning.
why continue buying seeds?
They want to grow other strains. You can keep moms of all your favorites, but to grow a new strain you need to start someplace. Unless of course, you know someone growing a strain you want to grow and will provide a few clones.

yeah i was figuring that folks would just buy different strains, thats what i would do.
my question however is....
1> buy seeds from seedbank.
2> plant seeds.
3> allow one femals and one male to pollenate thus producing more seeds.
4> save second batch of seeds for later.
now, is this second batch of seeds going to be any less potent than the originals?
thats what my main question was.
i know you can use clones etc, but if you dont want to grow year round or if you just want a small amount than just having seeds would be preferable to clones, at least for me.
would also allow you to practice without spending 100 bucks every 10 attempts either.

and breeding a hybrid will not reproduce the parents...you have variations of both parents' attributes along with some being the same. they need to be sorted by the 3 main phenotype's ya get then cubed or bred back to itself for several generations to stabilize the strain. it takes a lot of time, space and patience for this and is best left in the hands of experienced breeders who can afford a crop of seeds instead of the sinsimillia we want.
this can explain it a lot better than i can:

Just because you are cloning doesnt mean you have to grow year around. You can just maintain your mother plants until your ready to take a cutting again, no different than caring for regular home plants :).

im not talking about growing two different types of plants.
i want to know if i took a package of durban poison seeds (or any kind of strain( and grew both a male and female of that particular strain so that i could acquire more seeds in order to poractice without going into the poorhouse whether or not the second batch of seeds produced from the originals would be any weaker than the originals.
so basically what im looking at is,........
1> spend 100 bucks on a given seed strain, for conversation sake, durban poison.
2> grow the pack of 10 seeds, allow a male and female from this package of durban poison seeds to pollenate and grow seeds of their own.
3> now from this pollenation i have a bunch of durban poison seeds to grow more durban poison plants later and can spend money on a different strain right?
OR are these new seeds not as good for some reason as their originals?
if they are weaker, why?
essentially im trying to ask if the strain will lose its potency or characteristics through simple breeding of two of the same strain type.

You will lose the 'hybrid vigor' with F2's.
Plus, how would you know if the male you used was a 'genetic champ'?
If you only pollinate one female, or use just one male, you are putting EVERYTHING into one basket.
You could take three women, Tyra Banks, Brooke Burke, and Condi Rice.
Now if you use Woody Allan's genes, the first 2 female choices would be good moms, but maybe not exactly what is best for Woody.
A Condi X Woody, could be a better choice, both are intelligent & have power with the media, to reach the community.
BUT... most would forget Woody and use Arnold Schwarzenegger.
A Burke X Schwarzenegger or a Banks X Schwarzenegger, would have [the potential for] great physical features. There offspring would be more predisposed for physical greatness. A Condi X Arnold, might be a good balance, but not as much of a KO as the other two.
But what if you used Peter Griffin (The Family Guy) as the father? Well, my opinion is that you would have less of a chance of making a better female offspring than the mothers you had in the first place. You would improve the male side of the gene pool (Peters son's would not be as stupid, fat, lazy). But the males would need to be used again to breed with females (we don't want males for anything other than breeding.). This would only be done if you were trying to get a specific trait from a male (OMG, this would almost never happen), say Peter's rapist wit! (heyheyheyheyheyehey)
Since almost no one grows males from seed to death, how do you know what traits to look for in a male?
Think of your female as your daughter.
It's time to marry her away, do you want to choose from 5 guys or 100 guys or the 1 guy that showed up at your door and you decided not to kill. And since almost no one grows males, lets say that you do not speak the same language as your daughters suitors.
If your gonna breed do it wil Arnold and not Danny Devito

Around here, if you just have a couple plants that are being treated as houseplants, you're going to get punished, but not as much as if you had your whole grow setup with 100 plants in various stages of growth.
Just a couple plants you can always say personal use.... try telling a judge that you had 20 plants for personal use!
