Well, no they are not bad. I use both clay and plastic and find no problems with either, yet some people say plastic pots encourage mold.
All you gotta look out for is watering times with clay cos it'll absorb some of the water you give the plant. Otherwise its fine.
You might wanna think about transplanting the plants though into bigger containers.
i give clay a thumbs up...
: )
I was reading up on hydroton {clay} pellets yesterday in I think MAximum Yield and there was a reference to the clay having an affinity for toxic salts, binding them OUT of the soil.
Knowm, does this apply to clay pots as well?
My only complaint about clay pots is they don't come in a shape that suits my needs. I prefer a relatively deep, square, pot or bucket, with a handle for the larger size.
3-gallon sour cream tubs from a TexMex place get my thumbs up.
Just be sure to drill holes in the SIDES too because the bottom isn't designed to drain right obviously.
Hmmmmm.. I have never heard of such toxicity building up in clay pots..
I do like Maximum Yield and think they provide great INFO!
The pellets seem to work fine for the gardeners I have encountered... they have all been pretty anal though and rinse the rocks after each use..
One guy even bleached his rocks... which I think is a JOKE... and a serious waste of time and energy... but his plants were NICE!!!!!!!!!!
LOL
I would not worry at all about such build up in your pots..
Actually what Maximum Yield said was that the clay holds the salts in a good way, so they're not in the soil. There was an article where they recommended putting clay pellets in the bottom of your pots for that reason.
Seems unneccessary anyway. Never mind.
HI Stinky
I always (most of the time) fill the bottom 1/2 inch of my pots with perlite (I use a sheet of newspaper to keep the perlite from falling through the drainage holes)... Clay pellet are probably a good idea too..
The main reason I like doing this..
When water drains from the bottom of my containers , I let the pots sit in the water/overflow... sometimes this is up to 1 inch of water... having perlite or clay rocks at the bottom of your container prevent roots from drownig or soil on the bottom getting soggy and lacking adequate O2..

I don't use clay pots anymore for the simple reason that I've found they seep water. Put some water in a clay dish or pot, set it on a piece of wood for two days, and there will be a ring of water on the wood under the pot.
For some people this is why they like clay pots... especially people who feel the need to water more often than needed..Quote:
