red stalk and stems

I aquired some clones a while ago from a friend, they had a noticable nutrient decifiency of some sort which I could tell by the stalk and stems being very red. It started clearing up good on the new growth but there was still noticable red on the new stems, and the old ones were still as red as ever. I also aquired a couple more clones that were in good health from another friend, but they are starting to show some red on the stems as well. I use "Earth Juice" ferts. I have their whole line of products (grow, bloom, catalyst, meta-k, microblast, naural up and down.) When i purchased them the man at the Hydroponic store said that Earth Juice needed calcium added to it, he reccomended using oyster shell when I asked how much to use, he asked what it was for so I shut up and bought it. I've been adding a little bit of crushed oyster shell that I break into a powder when I mix my ferts, But I'm not sure how much to use, I think this could be why my stems are red. Does anybody here have any idea how much oyster shell to use? or reccomend something else that may help?

I have read posts claiming the red stems, etc are the result of too much temperature fluctuation ... but I have only one 'red-stem' plant right now, grown with 5 other 'green-stem' plants, all same strain, same everything, so I doubt the temperature diagnosis could be right .. ?? .. :smokin:

Yeah Ive had a few plants who had red stems.
Never made a difference to me sorta looks cool too.
I wouldnt make to much of it.

Red stem is often the first sign of a nitrogen defciency. This can be because you need to add Nitrogen or you need to adjust your PH so that your plant can actually absorb the Nitrogen.

Almost all clones have red stems.. this is not a problem at all.. But when you have a plant that has a green stalk and it is 3 weeks old and you still want to veg it for 3 more weeks and you notice that the stalk is starting to go red and spread to secondary growth, then you should take some action...

Eventually the plant will/can turn completly red and all the stems will become spindley and brittle...

ALWAYS check your PH first...

actually the stalk was origionally red when I got it. The new growth has been green, and I know it's from better care than the origional owner took. I think the red stalk is gonna stay red, and the new growth should be better. And the temp has stayed about hte same throughout it's life.

NEW growth is what MATTERS!!! glad to hearthe good news...

eventually all the red will slowly turn to green...
