smokin out a samurai pipe

So i was in Japan over the summer for 2 weeks and chanced across a little shop that sold wooden things. In the corner i found some replicas of old pipes the samurai used to smoke tobaco out of. Basicly its a long wooden tube with 2 brass ends. on end you smoke out, the other is a tiny, tiny, bowl. You can basicly fit a little nug and some shake and thats bout it. i bought it n e way cuz it was like 100 yen. came home and found an interesting way to smoke out of it.

the bowl was very bowl-shaped and made of brass so it heats up pretty fast. (got the burn marks to prove it...) My friend has the genius stoned-idea that instead of lighting the weed, we heat up the bowl. so we did that and each smoked one tiny bowl. mind you this bowl is less about a quarter the size of most glass bowls.

for some reason the weed hit us fast and hard. it was bopmb weed but we smoked it before and it took 3 regualr sized bowls to get the three of us high. we came to the conclusion that the weed is vaporized slightly and burned as well. it burnined weird and withered to brown like a vaporizer does.

can someone varify exactley what is happening?
