I'm looking for employment...
Here's my dilemma:
I can't account for the past five years. I've been working and making money... but nothing that I can pay taxes for or list on a resume/application (although the skill set required for this particular work would be a perfect fit in a business setting... enough said).
I'm not sure how I should/could explain this 5 year gap.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey, there's all kinds of formats to resumes... you don't have to use the traditional "work history" format. It sounds like you've attained some good/great business skills. One way to address it is to talk about how your transferable skills apply to the gig you're going after. Employers like resourceful, self directed types like you seem to be... so make up some stuff to fill in the gaps or anticipated questions.

maybe you were at college, a stay at home dad, in prision, or was someones care giver.
Join the Coast Gurad, or if you hate water, the Army or National Guard.

I've known people in your position that did this, and it worked out very well for them both during their service, and later. A lot of companies will hire vets, and your employment gap will not be as significant.

Maybe you can tell the guy the honest truth. Tell the interviewer exactly what you did and then get down to how this experience will help his business.

Fuck the job, self employment/contract. Sales, service, depends on your ability with poeple and your appearance.
Besides unemployed poeple are consultants, you could always talk about someform of trading experience or w/e.
