Shameless Mexican drug dealers smuggled tons of cocaine into the country stashed inside tombstones - and even inside a statue of the Virgin Mary, authorities said yesterday.

"Like graverobbers - who have no respect for the dead - this drug organization used revered tombstones to smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine into New York City," said John Gilbride, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York office.

The sacrilegious Mexican traffickers were nailed after an 18-month cross-country investigation, officials said.

The New York angle began to emerge last May when the NYPD, the DEA and Nassau County narcotics cops tailed a dealer running drugs between Houston, Washington Heights and Atlanta.

That lead eventually brought cops and feds to a Brooklyn warehouse stacked with drug-filled tombstones.

The tombstones had traveled from Mexico through Laredo, Tex., and up to New York - borne by unsuspecting FedEx deliverers.

Operation Omni Presence led to 11 indictments issued by the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan, officials said yesterday.

The tombstones are just the latest way international drug traffickers sneak their wares into the country.

Colombian dope dealers were busted in February for the cruel scam of slicing open Labrador puppies to stash packets of liquid heroin inside their bodies, then stitching them back up.
