Why are European governments pretending to be unaware of CIA torture centres?

This week it has been confirmed that European governments were aware of CIA renditioning flights and the existence of torture centres.
The European Council Parliamentary Assembly (ECPA) member Dick Marty declared European administrations were in fact aware of the CIA's secret torture prisons.

The report also highlights evidence that the CIA has set up a coordinated system to outsource the interrogations of terrorism suspects to countries where torture is used.

If this is the case then we have to ask the important question: Why are other governments pretending to be unaware of such things?
"It is obvious that the CIA attempted to conduct illegal activities in Europe, which the European intelligence services were aware of." Commented Swiss Senator Marty.

This indicates that at some level there is an understanding between sovereign governments that the torture of people by the intelligence services is acceptable. At worst it indicates that the intelligence services of different governments are colluding together to kidnap and torture whoever they choose, where ever they choose.

Marty went on to comment that the intelligence services and the governments involved were using "gangster like tactics".

Yesterday the London Guardian reported the story of A Moroccan man wanted in Spain over his alleged links to the 9/11 attackers who told his extradition hearing he had been tortured on the "direct orders" of British intelligence.

The British intelligence service have been directly responsible for the torture I have suffered, and are now directly complicit in ensuring I am removed from the UK by whatever means necessary and sent back to Morocco." Farid Hilali alleges.

We also know that the foreign Office of the UK is aware of British intelligence engaging in the torture of terror suspects.

The evidence came from Britain's former ambassador to Uzbekistan, Craig Murray, who defied the Foreign Office by publishing documents on the internet that proved the British Government knowingly received information extracted by torture in the "war on terror".

The torture programs we have seen evidence of at Guantanamo Bay and in Iraq have filtered down and are now being implemented by the intelligence agencies throughout the world.

These programs of torture come from the very top, for example, torture mastermind Donald Rumsfeld's Copper Green program, which manifested itself with arbitrary rape and fatal beatings at Camp X-ray and Abu Ghraib.
Former associate editor of the Wall Street Journal and former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury Dr. Paul Craig Roberts has outlined his conviction that the torture program was not set up to gain any kind of real information from accused detainees because torture is renowned for extracting useless and false information. The real reason for the torture is to make the terrorists implicate themselves and thus create the perception of a real terrorist threat.

Roberts said that the CIA was aware that the vast majority of detainees are not terrorists, proven by the fact that Pakistani gangsters admitted to rounding up innocent people in street sweeps and selling them to the US government as terrorists for anything up to $25,000. These people are now at Guantanamo Bay.

As we know The LA Times reported that no leaders of Al-Qaeda were found at Guantanamo Bay. Most of them were shoemakers, farmers who had never even heard of America and people who were given guns by the Taliban and shoved onto the front lines.

Also The official army report on Abu Ghraib said that between seventy five and ninety percent of prisoners were totally innocent and just hadn't had their papers in order.

How many of the people being swiped off the streets all over the world and flown to CIA gulags are totally innocent? Have not the most tragic and hideous events in human history revealed that the systematic detainment and torture of people is irrevocably evil and repellant to every belief system and reasoning behind our existence?

Like those who disappeared in the Holocaust will history just record these people as names with a one word description such as "Auschwitz"? We may never get to find out.
