Fans, Fans, Fans

I'm about to get my new grow room cranked up, but I was just wondering what others might think of my fan situation. I'm using a 365CFM fan to circulate air through a charcoal filter for room ventilation [~300CF/grow area]. I have a 635CFM fan for 2 600W HID's, but not sure if that's gonna' be quite enough. Anyway, my cousin works for a wholesaler and was able to get me a Fantec 980CFM fan really cheap, so I picked up on it; would it be better to use the Fantec to cool the HID's and just use an electronic speed control on it, 'cause it does draw some air.

I think you can run the 980 for your room air circulation... then your 365 for your 600Watters...

I don't know. For fans and air circulation, I've found out that the best thing is just to test, experiment and test some more.

this fanteck is a monster fan and can cool many thousands of watts,

you can get a controller, so that you can control fan speed...980 may be to much for you.. it can cause all sorts of weird circulation issues in your house

I have seen a 2000 cfm fantech running in a house..it was awesome... women and children could not open and doors in the house.. cause of all the suction it caused... seriously!
it also brought dust up from the basement through cracks in the walls and light fixtures..


not to mention what it did to a fire in the fire place if the fan was on.. a feaking nightmare.. it oonly happened once...!! it was UGLY

Yeh, I do have a controller for the Fantech, 'had to get a special [bigger] one;like a dumbass, I wiped out one of my controllers 'cause the Fantech is rated at 3 amps, and so's the controller, but I didn't consider the surge current when the fan started, so it fried a resistor in the controller.
Anyway, I'm using the Fantech for the lights; I'll have to feather it way back probably, 'cause I'm just cooling 2 600W HID's. If I understand room circulation correctly, the smaller fan should work fine at swapping out all the air every 3 or 4 minutes; it's pulling through a charcoal filter, so that and the "plumbing" put a little more drag on the fan. But yeh, I hear 'ya about experimenting. I just don't want to end up with a hot room and all the hassle, so hopefully my investment in the fans will pay off.

Your room will never be hot with those monster fans.

Fans are sooooo often overlooked. Good to see someone worrying about them.

How are you installing that fan and charcoal filter together again?

BTW I have a 1280 blower to cool my lights right now and it works great. I built an air box so I can run multiple single outputs to each light and still have plenty of air.

You can build one out of a rubbermaid tub 10 gallon size and some tin collars. You need to seal the whole thing tight and use 1/4 bolts to hold the top on and door stop seal to seal the lid closed. It's not hard at all but it gives you plenty of air and a good delivery system you can add to later if you need to.

Just something to think about.

It would be really helpful if you could post some pics, or if you already have, to post a link to them.
That sounds really interesting, using a Rubbermaid or Sterlite container to make an air box; I have several big ones around here.
I'm using rigid insulation that's 1/2" thick:

I have to cut each piece to size, glue it together with a special glue for this stuff, and use silver insulation tape on the edges; I bought all of this stuff, plus the collars, at my friendly AC wholesaler.
I had to make my own boxes over the ducts in the ceiling too, as I use a bigger intake than they normally make insulated duct covers for, and some place on the 'net wanted a fortune to make 'em for me. Actually, that's easier, as I basically just have to cut 4 sides & a top piece, and use a hole cutter to make the holes for the collars, then put it all together.
'Just a question about a fan that big: isn't it noisy, and do you have to feather is down in speed; or possibly you're doing some heavy duty cooling.
Oh, regarding the charcoal filter, it's connected directly to the 6" fan [Elicient] and the exhaust from the fan goes to a room exhaust duct. The larger fan is only for the lights, which worry me the most with all the heat.
Believe me, if I ever did this again though, I'd use reflectors with 8" ducts; you figure the area for 6" & 8", and 8" is actually almost twice as much area.
