Egoism and Divinity are incompatible. An egoist can never aspire for the Life Divine. The ego should be completely annihilated in order to progress along the path of spirituality. However, self-confidence, as different from ego, is of supreme importance in spiritual progress. A person who has no faith in himself cannot have faith in God. Self-confidence and faith in God are always found in juxtaposition. They compliment each other. Faith is a cardinal virtue, and faith in God is the prop of life. Though God dwells in everyone, unless one has faith in God, one cannot become divine. Some people might say that they will believe only after they have experienced, but this is like putting the cart before the horse. In spirituality, faith always precedes experience.

Why exactly is faith a cardinal virtue? Who decided it would be so? I have no faith, especially not in God, and yet I am very fulfilled. I am also very self-confident, but there's no faith. I say that I, or anyone, can be "divine" without God.

When you say faith precedes experience, you're in effect saying that if you condition yourself to look at the world in a certain way, then you'll see what you WANT to see in your experiences. I believe the complete opposite, I only have faith in what I experience, what I see, hear, taste, smell and touch. Faith in anything else is superfluous, useless and, I think, ultimately harmful.
