being engaged doesnt mean adamn thing, unless the govt considers you guys common law married, i dont think she gets anyhting because you guys are not legally binded together. I think anyways it could be differnt where you are at.

u aren't married, so i wouldn't worry too much about it, engagements prob' mean jack shit in the courts, it's marriage that counts,
there's a bit of a myth in the UK that if u have a "living together" relationship that lasts a over certain length of time, your partner would then become your "common law" wife (marriage or not) and then be able to claim half of whats yours :mad: , but i believe this to be false,
i reckon for your partner to make any kind of a claim against your business/profits etc, she would have to prove she contributed a significant amount into the business, both phsically and financially,
i get the impression she did neither,
don't let her lawyers scare you, keep any letters they send u, YOUR lawyers will want to see them, if they are wrong in telling u to shut down your business, u can sue the shit out of them.

What is her reasoning for claiming half, just the engagement? Engagements dont mean jack. If she invested $ into the business then she might have a valid claim or if her name is linked to the company in some official way. But if the engagement is her only reason then I highly doubt she has legs to stand on in court. Did you get a court order to shut down, or was it just her lawyer that said you had to? Coz I don't think a lawyer has the power to make you do that. Go get your self a good lawyer and see what they have to say. If it all goes your way, in the end, you should be able to sue her for lost profits and maybe some other things. Good luck...keep us updated.

where I am (ontario) common-law is when 2 people a) are living at the same address for more than a year OR b) they have a child together...I'm not sure what the law is where you are, but here common-law marriage is just aboot the same as the official ceremony.
definitely get legal aid. do it fast, get somebody protecting your rights...I don't think that your ex's lawyer can tell you to shut down a company, not without a court order of some kind. but if you listen to them, and do shut down the company, you'd be responsible for the profit loss, any employees you may have, that sort of thing...watch your step, and always keep records of the non-illegal things. the littlest things can bite you in the ass later on.
