Large Turnout for Iraq Constitution Vote
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Sunni Arabs voted in surprisingly high numbers on Iraq's new constitution Saturday, many of them hoping to defeat it in an intense competition with Shiites and Kurds over the shape of the nation's young democracy after decades of dictatorship. With little violence, turnout was more than 66 percent in the three most crucial provinces.
The constitution still seemed likely to pass, as expected. But the higher-than-forecast Sunni turnout made it possible the vote would be close - or even go the other way - and cast doubt on U.S. hopes that the charter would succeed in luring Sunnis away from the insurgency.
Washington hopes the constitution will be approved so Iraqis can form a permanent, representative government and the 150,000 U.S. troops can begin to withdraw.

Iraq vote turnout may exceed 10 million
Turnout in Iraq's constitutional referendum may have reached 10 million voters, or nearly two thirds of those registered, a member of Iraq's Electoral Commission said after polls closed.

You guys are falling for it again. When the sons got killed, when saddam was captured (gotta admit, that one kinda fooled me), turnover of "soveriegnty", the earlier elections... How many times are you guys gonna fall for it? You are the best kind of marks, you think you are in on the scam. When as many bombs go off tommorrow as yesterday, you'll pin your hopes on the elections in December, and after that??? I'm not worried, you'll find something.

one question, which im sure you'll be happy to answer... just how does being able to vote ensure stability and a freedom-loving leader for the iraqis?
you think that whoever they elect will somehow be some benevolent leader that likes to barbque on sundays and play baseball in the spring sunshine?

Having a major vote turnout is quite the blow to Zarqawi and gang. I do believe the radical Sunni's won't be pleased either to see their brothers and sisters, more less, abandon the old ways of Saddam for the vote.

Iraqs sovereignty won't be the same as the U.S., nor should it be. It's a different culture with their own beliefs and morals. They'll create a type of democracy that represents Sunni's, Shi-ites, and Kurds alike. Quite the accomplishment!
500 years??? Dig back in the books again Nick!

More stable in the entire region? NOT! All of Iraq having the right to vote, granted freedoms that their neighbors aren't enjoying will probably piss some off. Now lets see how many others in the Middle East follow.

Iraqi troop strength is up to 200,000 with the 155,000 we have there makes it a lot more difficult for insurgents...don't ya think?
That's an extra 200,000 more troops than we had there in Oct. of "03". Is it that hard to admit that things are progressing?

The people were dancing in the streets of Mosul celebrating the passing of the constitution. An Iraqi blogger has some video.
