first time grower what is easier soil or hydro?

I am geting ready to build a stealth cabinet. Can I still do a screen of grass with soil pots instead of hydro? I do not mind if it takes a little longer just so it can be done. I want to try simple the first time then experement anfter that.
Also instead of buying seeds to se while I am practicing, if I just used old rag weed seeds but grew it as sinse would it improbve any? :confused:

both are easy if you give them attention.. soil is definitley less work if you have done your homework,,,
