I am very curious about training plants to make new branches. I've heard that if you tie the top down it will sprout a new stem. Is this true? Any info on training or pruning would be greatly appreciated!

The only way to manipulate the natural expression of new growth is to TOP or remove the leading new growth at any stem point.
If you remove one, two will grow. If you remove two, four will grow.
etc........
You can enhance natural new growth by bending, tieing, or doing anything to foilage that exposes more light to any particular point where new growth happens according to the plants genetic blueprint.
Tieing a plant down at the top will not force new sprouts.....but will rather enhance the growth that is already present or potentially present and when you allow light to hit it, it will grow.
If you read some of the latter pages of 9skies Hardonna thread, you will see what tying and bending of fan leaves can do for inner secondary growths.
Pruning in general isnt such a good idea for MJ....
But you can top and double your kolas....or bend and grow some new ones :)

After a first grow in which I was almost afraid to touch my plants, I learned just how malleable MJ is. I have a tall, lanky sativa that was reaching her CFL, so, instead of repositioning, I simply bent it over below the top fan leaves. Just one simple bend exposed eight secondaries.
You can bend and then tie to expose these secondaries to light, or, according to a video I watched, you can bend until you hear a *crack* and it'll stay bent.
Actually, I accidentally bent to the *crack* sound and the plant is as happy as ever...I had thought it would kill everything above where you snapped the main step, but that's not the case.

thanks a lot guys! very helpful! one more question though the plant is 3 weeks old is it safe to manipulate at this point? as you can tell this is a first grow i'm enjoying every stage. i will get some pics up soon hope you'll check'em out.peace!

3 weeks is perfectly fine.
once it gets growing more or less sideways the limbs grow up
and it will look like a row of plants but its really one,
it does look like a bunch of lil colas' and i guess you could call them that
but to me the true 'cola budd' is actually the single tip top budd sometimes insanely huge matured and loaded with crystally goodness from a untopped plant.
but im old enough for the language to of changed.

dont use fishing line to tie over a plant,
i found ribbon worked good (prefer green color) it wont cut into it and a spool is enough to go a long way and cheep
