Seriously though lead is very toxic. Lead is a poison. Ingesting lead may lead to lead poisoning. Lead is a verb, noun and adjective.
I think to be truly safe for smoking purposes the metal has to be anodized.

First of all, you'd either have to eat a chunk of the lead, or hold a butane lighter over it and constantly inhale while the lighter is igniting the lead, every day for a year. Now for some of us pot smokers, that is quite possible :D

But yeah, lead poisoning is a slow and painful way to die. From fumes, extremely slow, you just get stupider and stupider every day for 15 years or so until you die, probably blaming it on the weed. For ingestion, it would be a very sudden death, many years down the road.

So, unless he knew he had lead poisioning and was able to explain it, the papers would never know :P
