Most standard hps bulbs only give out more to the red side of the spectrum which the plants craving for during thier flowering stage, have you got a multi purpose hps bulb? if not then stick with the flourocent bulbs for veg for the mean time. only light i got is a 400watt hps like yourself bulb i got the multi purpose bulb but they seems to react more to natural sunlight...i lil confused myself
Heres a pic of the package my multi-purpose bulb came in...hope this helps!
I would suggest purchasing a 1000w HPS/MH switcher. You can purchase them off ebay.ca for cheap and MH is way better for veg then HPS could be ;).
Ze w33d Farm3r , The sun puts out more then 400w depending on your location, you should have nothing to be confused over :).
A normal, standard HPS bulb is not effective for vegging. It can be used, with success, but the plant will get stretched out budsites during vegging, and by the time flowering is done, you get stretched out, lanky, airy, wispy buds. A standard Hps bulb doesn't give off enough UV rays that the plant needs for that stage. That's why it isn't such a good idea to use JUST an Hps for vegging.
I would use those Floros now that you said you have. Floros/CFL's are amazing bulbs to use for vegging because you can get the plant really close to the bulb without burning. Floro bulbs give off very little heat. So use the floros for vegging, and you HPS for flowering. Your plants will thank you :D Good luck.
ok, thank all of you. i appreciate it. i will stick with my floros for vegging and my hps(im going to try to get a mh, but until then im gonna stick w/my hps)for flowering....the only question i still got:  *Will the hps work for the whole budding process and everything after that?*
thank you guys once again.
I replied in your other thread what the best thing to do was :)Quote:

1. Germinating/sprouting
2. Veg.
3. Flower
4. Harvest/cut down
5. Cure
After curing, the whole process starts again. So yes, stick with your floros for now, they will work for vegging(18/6 or 24/0) well. Yes, use an Hps for flowering(12/12). Use those for now and once you begin to advance and actually know how the plant grows, then advance further. But using the lights of what you suggested, will produce quality pot with good yeilds(with practice ;)..) Good luck.
Hey, so wait, you can use plain old normal florecsent lights for veggin?! kickass i was startin to get worried, startin my first grow soon and only ordered a 400w hps i was startin to get worried..
i had a switchable 175 w, and a switchable 400 watt
used the 400w MH with the 175w MH during veg, and then switched the 400w to HPS and switched out the 175w back and forth MH/HPS during bloom... of course i always light the sides and underneaths with floros.
it was about a 3"x5" grow space
Or just get a hortilux bulb.....
question
I read that using MH and HPS at the sams time is the best
for veg and bloom
