Reservoir temp 85: anyone tried this?

Hey everyone. I want to try hydro, using a Rubbermaid 35-gallon reservoir (flat bottom). Itâ??s the hottest part of summer (100 degree plus everyday). I have a some bottles of liquids sitting on the floor of the room (nutes and pH down). To find roughly what temperature my reservoir nutes would be at, I measured the temperature of the bottle of pH Down, at the hottest part of the day. It was 86 degrees -- at least cooler than it was outside. And since the nutes flow in and out of a reservoir, the water movement might cool the water a little more, hopefully down to 80 degrees.
My question is: has anyone done hydro at that high of a res temp? A water chiller isnâ??t possible. But I could add a lot of beneficial micros (Hydroguard), or a lot of hydrogen peroxide? Someone even told me to run chlorine in the reservoir â?? that the plants wonâ??t mind it.
I know from what Iâ??ve read that 65 is the best temp; at high temps [like mine would be] the water canâ??t hold oxygen so root rot, etc. But has anyone actually done a grow where the res temp was over 80? And air temps around 90. Is trying to do hydro at these temps a really bad idea or is there a way you can pull it off?

I tried that once what a nightmare. Root problems and end results were some very spindly looking bud. I have heard using a potassium-silicate product will help with heat related stress. Advanced Nutrients makes one I think Barricade, also botanicare makes Silica Blast.

the stress that the high temps create could cause plants to hermie...raise res off the floor/on top of a little stand and check temps...

cut a small hole in the top of the resevoir (3 0r 4") put a large pvc elbow in the hole and mount a small (3 or 4") fan attached to the open end of the Elbow blowing air into the resevoir should cool the tempature down in the res at least 10 - 15 degrees. Try it it works.

Bill, chlorine will kill the plants and stop nutrient uptake. That why when people use city water they let it sit over night to let the chlorine evaporate.

Chlorine = Bad

Water that hot will not hold enough Oxygen but you could add H²O² to help that. The room temperature is way to hot your plants will turn hermie on you at that temperature. Try a large waterfall to add more oxygen to the water and it will cool the water too by a few degrees.

My resevoir sits above my hot water heater of my house. I too have a high rez. temp. Not sure how high but it's up there. I have had some problems associated with that like rapid increase in pH, foamy rez, etc. Be careful with the organic supplements like stuff with fish shit and so on. I use Floraliscious. It can be as beneficial to your plants as it can be bad for resevoir stability if not watched closely.

MY suggestion is to raise it off the ground a few inches like someone noted, and run airstones in your resevoir. I use an air pump with two air outlets and run two 4" airstones, one on either end of the rez. That may aid in cooling it and will also prolong the health of your rez. Give it a shot man. You will learn a lot for the next grow even if you don't succeed.

I don't think I mentioned anything about Chlorine. He is asking for a way to cool the resevoir water down without a chiller. I tried to find the thread that I read on another site but several people tried the fan thingy on the res water and all reported reduction in water tempature by 10 degrees or better. I tried it on my 50 gal resevoir and it did indeed reduce the tempature of the water. I will try to find the thread . It even explains techniquely how the hot air outside the res doesn't keep the fan from cooling the water . It is interesting stuff for those who may not be able to afford a chiller .

no sweat Zandor as much as you are keeping up with you do a remarkable job. Been trying to get one of my digital cameras to work so I could get some pics of my grow to ya. Its been limping right along until about a week ago then .... OMG..... the whole room has turned ionto a damn jungle. Biggest problem is giving the buggers some room LOL. I did have one serious problem this morning one of my soil bushes which have all been doing great seem to be wilting from the ground up serious wolting and stem weakness. just one plant(odd it's in soil , you'd think my problem would be in hydro , lol)think it may be because I used hydro nutes water to water one day ( being lazy). I seperated it from the rest and will keep an eye on it.
Tied down all my soil plants mostl;y just making logistical adjustments , keeping nutes simple 3 part GH. Got one of my two bakearounds they only sent one , the dirt bags . tryu to get my digital working and get some pics .
I have a resevoir heat problem as well I fan the 50 gallon drum and water through 5 gallon bucket with frozen two liter bottles its work but so is taking a dump at my age lmao. the girls get cool water though as a result .
