Tips on growing outdoors?

Hey y'all,

I'd like to try my hand at growing a plant or 2 outdoors. I have a pretty big chunk of undeveloped land behind my house. I asked dh the other night what he thought about trying to get a few going back there. It's pretty wooded, except right in the front (see pic below) What do you guys think? Would I have to do anything special with the soil? Will the MAJOR heat and humidity of the deep south kill it? I'm thinking that all those weeds in the front would hide it so no one would notice it. Any feedback would be appreciated. :)

dig a big hole for ur plants... and set up a private section, so no other plants can grow in ur plants' soil.. get pesticides and insecticides n stuff n be on gard for pests trying to attack your plant.. other than that, i'd say ur good..
