metal or plastic?
metal would be preffered but MUCH harder unless you are good with welding or have a bunch of shit you can screw together to make a good one. Most (home made bongs) are plastic with some other material for the bowl. It must NOT be plastic. I think most have plastic basins, plastic or metal downstem and a metal bowl. A socket from a socket rench works well for a bowl. And a metal tube for downpipe and soda bottle for basin. It will be heavy so don't let it tip. ANd make sure you are using safe metals
yea i was gonna use a socket. So would u suggest a plastic or metal tube with the socket? Im gonna use a milk carton (you know the gallon plastic ones). So yea.

Metal tube, def.
For the chamber, see if you can't get some acrylic tube from a hardware store; if you can, it's worth it. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE PVC!!!
I have always used bamboo, 2"-6" O.D., short 1/8" brass pipe nipple, and a 1/8"-1/2" reducer brass.

The only thing i cant find oldhippie is the bamboo. Ive got the nipple and reducer but the bamboo i cant get. Ill just buy brass pipe, hopefully that will do.

Also, Im gonna sound stupid, but what is O.D? I got aht from oldhippies post.

O.D. is outside diameter. You should be able to find bamboo at craft stores, I would say go to your nearest swamp, but I noticed were you are from the desert. I have used old bamboo furniture too.
make sure u get a sealer for the bamboo or it will ROT and thats not good.
