60-100 power for me. I also have a 30X jeweler's loupe and I can not tell the trichome color very well with that. Good for bugs, etc. An led light with the microscope is a good touch.
Howzit?
I like the portable "Eyeclops" with the thumb-drive.
100x , 200x, 400x with multi-point lighting.
I get some decent macro shots with it;

The Led's used can add a purple tinge, but any decent photo editor can easily color correct.

The 200X is quite usable;

The 400X has no depth of field and requires a steady hand, or a mount.

It beats the hell out of holding your camera to the eyepiece of a $10 Ratty ol' shuck stylus scope;

That's my first macro shot took about a half hour of "blue air" to get this shot.
with the 'clop, I jus' snap away and toss the ones that "miss".
It's under $50. :)
Also use a "supereyes" and I was, indeed, supereyes'ed at the quality of the macro-videos.
Be happy to share one, but AVI's are not permitted. :(
They run about $25 with free shipping on a slow boat from China.
Got mo' betta?
