will 400 watt HPS/MH do a good job

I measured my soon to be grow area. I have a craw space beside second story pitched roof. The area is 3'x3'x 4'6". I am looking to grow 2-4 plants. I am after quality over quantity. I think a 400 watt hps/MH set up with meet the necesary lighting for quality. Your experience and input would be appreciated. Do you think that is a good set up? Also I may use CFL's for veg stage and HPS for flower. Does the 54" height cause a issue with growth" I guess the total grow height without burning would be a little over a meter, maybe 40"?

If this is like an attic area air exchange is critical. Also the height limitations may require you to mount the light vertical, located in the center of the 2-4 plants.

I have a 3" unused pipe vent that runs open into room. I guess I would be best using it to "bring air in" as opposed to exhaust..... I figure the fresh CO2 and oxygen is more beneficail then exhausting. I think I would use carbon filter and exhaust air into larger area of attic. Yes, I have to figure best way to hang light. I also wanted to ask about a shorter veg time and going to flower earlier to limit height. Is that a beneficial plan and will that hinder "bud quality"?

No, small plants make just as nice a bud as larger ones. the buds are just smaller. A 400 will do the job easily. Yes, use MH for veg, and HPS for flowering. As long as the plants get fresh air, in a space that small, it doesn't really matter if you're pulling the air or pushing it, as long as it's moving it. Heat may be an issue, so plan for some kind of way to control temps. Indica dominant plants generally grow shorter and bushier, so look for Indica dominant strains to grow.

I have AK 48 and OG kush seeds hopefully enroute. I guess the AK will grow higher. As far as heat, fall is coming so should not be a problem I hope. It is very insulated so it is more stable on temperature. I think with the outside air coming in and the heat of lamp, it should be be a decent balance. I guess I need low/wide planting pots to get more growing room. I figure approx 40" for plant height max. I need to figure how long to run MH light for veg before flowering. I am thinking 6 weeks possibly.
