metal halide is better than HPS for vegging. I run a F54T5HO four lamp for veg and bloom using two different lamp colors. At the moment I'm using the veg lamps with HPS to flower my plants. My personal opinion based on my experience is that watt for watt MH and T5HO are equally good for vegging. With my T5 I can start with less watts (216w), my HID lights are 400w. Once the plants are established, say week three, I think they can use more light so I go to the 400w MH. Is that clear? ;)
First, thanks for replying. Well there seem to be some people that say they see no difference between vegging with HPS vs MH and some that do. Deleting MH from the equation as well, I would like to know what others experience is with HPS vs T5HO blue grow spectrum lighting.
I've used MH HPS and T5 and IMO there is very little difference for vegging - I use T5 for vegging. When it comes to flowering nothing beats the HPS. The T5 lights are 6500k - very blue and work well. I use 3000K T5 lights in summer for flowering and get about 20% less yield on average. It saves on the electric bill since I'm in a high desert climate where summer temps reach 90-105 regularly. I don't even use MH any more.
