For all you folks who have been battling any or all of the aforementioned title headings read on!
I've tried just about everything to rid my hydro pots of those pesky fungus gnats and I have finally found a way to control if not eradicate these damn things. Follow the directions below and get back to us...
This formula is per gallon of water.
30 ml of Monterey 3 in 1
2 table spoons of azamax
20 - 25 ml of permethrin 10%
Mix well. Spray on your hydrocorn/hydroton or whatever your plants are planted in throughly as well as the whole plant. I sprayed every other day until I got those suckers, now I spray maybe twice a week. I have had zero problems with mildew, mites or gnats since I started using this formula.
I also installed a metered aerosol dispenser along with the aerosol can from bug source in each room.

How do I kill pests in the dirt with this insecticide?
Just spraying the top of the soil will not get the pests beneath, will it?
with this mixture of chemicals, can I:
spread the dirt and worm castings out on the floor and spray the dirt
and then gather the dirt together and put it in the buckets?
or will that hurt the growth of the plants?

You can sterilize your soil in the oven at 180 to 200 degrees for 10 minutes. Pick up a few of those disposable foil turkey baking pans. Spread soil about 4" deep and cover with aluminum foil and bake 10 minutes. Don't go over 200 degrees; use a meat or candy thermometer as most ovens don't have accurate sensors for the temperature. Allow to cool at least 20 minutes. You can microwave soil too. Use a polypro bag and add 2 lbs of soil placing the bag in the center of the microwave with the top open; microwave on high for 2 1/2 minutes, remove wrap top closed and let cool. Then again, a black garbage bag can be filled and just left in direct sunlight whenever the temperature is above 75 degrees. That black bag will heat up within 4-5 hours enough to sterilize the soil.
