Richard Eastman is running for the Los Angeles City Council. An AIDS patient who claims he owes his life to the use of marijuana, Richard is long time medical marijuana activist. He worked with Dennis Peron in founding the first cannabis buyers club in San Francisco way back in the 1990s and with Scott Imler in founding southern Californiaâ??s first medical marijuana collective, the Los Angeles Cannabis Resource Center.

Richard is certainly colorful and one of the most outspoken advocates for medical marijuana and marijuana law reform. Impassioned, articulate and a political realist, Richard will certainly make an excellent member of the Los Angeles City Council and will be a relentless and courageous fighter for patient rights.

He needs $300 in order to be able to file the papers to run for the office and I made the commitment to raise $100 towards that end.

The BIG election is coming up this Tuesday, Nov. 6. If you havenâ??t voted yet and you want to know which candidates are supportive of marijuana law, there are two websites with information on some of the candidates. Unfortunately, there are very few local candidates listed and no organization in the IE was able to put together a comprehensive voterâ??s guide.

Last Sunday five members of the Brownie Mary Democratic Club attended the Region 19 Democratic Directors Meeting in which there were candidates for offices present. I asked questions about their support for marijuana and two candidates made statements personally to me and while speaking publicly to the people at the meeting. They are Democrats running in Republican districts so it is an uphill battle although redistricting has made the districts less Republican then they were.

These two candidates are:
David Secor (D) â?? 50th Congressional District
Michael Williamson (D) â?? 42nd Congressional District

If these candidates are on your ballot, I encourage you to vote for them. Both of their opponents are old-line drug warriors totally opposed to both the medical and recreational use of marijuana.
