I've studied and need lighting assistance
Hello people, I've followed your prime directive (Trekkie humor) and have studied relentlessly before asking questions...so here goes! In my basement, I have a 9'x9' (or 9'x11' option) room with 8 foot ceiling. I have funds for a least four 1000 watt lights. There are so many brands out there that I don't know which to buy. I also wanted to buy the filter system so as to remove the odor. I don't know if I need one or two? I am also going to use lights with the cooling systems and I wanted to vent them through the filter(s) before exiting the hot air outdoors. I've been on e-bay and other sites and the prices are all over the place. Can anybody tell me the brands of lights, ballast, and bulbs that work well?
I've been told to buy the Big Kahuna XXX Magnum and I've also read about the Sun Systems lights. I can buy four of the sun system lights for the cost of two XXX Magnums. There are many others that I've read about also. I'd like something that won't burn my house down also!
I'm a little tired of reading about lights because they all say that they are the best. If anybody could forgive my lack of experience and guide me to the best lights and bulbs I'd appreciate it. My only requirement is that the light and ballast be interchangeable with the MH & HPS bulbs. Also, I'm assuming that four lights should be more than sufficient to light this space. My concern is that I don't overheat the room with the lights. Also, I can only do this once so I don't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong products. Any input will be appreciated.

In a 9x9 area with 4/1000 watters your looking at about 4600 lumens persqft. I think my math is right but if im wrong hopefully some will correct me. The closer to 5000 you get the better. So looks like enough light. Im not sure on Htg digital ballast (never owned one) but their magnetic ones are great for the price. Whatever you get remember to buy extra bulbs. With that being said, have you thought about using hps for veg and flower? It would be alot cheaper and itll leave you more money to get a good carbon filter or filters. I dont use those cause my room is way secluded so i dont know how big or many you will need. Sorry.
Those 1k lights are gonna throw out some heat so you are probably gonna need a dedicated ac. I do with 2/400s haha. But i know nothing about your setup. Hopefully you have thought about electricity. Thats gonna be alot of amps so hopefully you thought about how many circuits that room needs to run smoothly. Would hate for you to get everything and you cant run them cause of tripping breakers and things to that nature. Fire hazard being the most important. But you have probably thought about all of this already.
I have heard great things about phantom ballast. Out of my price range so i have never tried them. For bulbs i use hortilux eye. To be honest, I cant tell a major difference from the cheap htg ones for plant growth. Thats just my little 2 cents

Is it that important to go so big?...the first time.

Thanks for the feedback. I have thought about the a/c issue. I examined a friends setup and he uses 4 lights. They are paired as two sets, and cooled with a 6" fan for each pair and the heat is carried outside. I'm not going big, I'm just using the room that I have and want to do it right the first time because I can afford to do this again. I won't have many plants at first, but at some point I will grow the legal maximum allowed in my state (and for my room size) and I don't want to have to go back and buy stuff.
Has anybody used the sun System lights and digital ballast? They seem very affordable.

Made a mistake in the last post and took to long to correct it. Here's what I wanted to say:
Thanks for the feedback. I have thought about the a/c issue. My room is in the basement and it is very cool even in summer. I'm hoping that the room doesn't overheat by using the cooling tubes in the lights. I examined a friend's setup and he uses 4 Big Kahuna lights. They are paired as two sets and cooled with a 6" fan for each pair. The heat is carried outside. It's in his basement and his setup doesn't over heat. I'm open to ideas about a/c cooling though - especially for a basement situation.
I'm not going big, I'm just using the room that I have and want to do it right the first time because I can't afford to do this again. I won't have many plants at first because I'm learning; but at some point I will grow the legal maximum allowed in my state (and for my room size) and I don't want to have to go back and buy stuff. Better to have more than I need now than less than I need later.
Has anybody used the Sun System lights and digital ballast? They seem very affordable. My real concern is finding an affordable system that works. I'd hate to overpay. I've mentioned only two systems but I'm open to any other suggestions for cost effective lighting systems that work well. Thanks people! Keep it coming!
