Using Cannabis leads to hard drugs
This is a copy of an article I saw posted, makes interesting reading
Serious drug use is caused from smoking marijuana
The statement that cannabis leads on to harder more damaging drugs is a statement that we all hear almost daily.
The â??gatewayâ?? theory has been researched in some detail. This is the idea that smoking at a young age increases the possibility of these people leading on to harder drugs as it opens up a gateway in the brain or body.
The case of the Australian twins is interesting. Like all studies of this nature outside factors such as social and influential factors play a big role and yet in this case these factors were kept almost the same. This study took sets of twins, one of which smoked cannabis in their teens and the other that did not and actually concluded that a significantly higher number took harder drugs when they had smoked cannabis in their teens.
Another similar experiment with teenage subjects showed that they were 15% more likely to take harder drugs if they had been smoking around the age of 15.
A study on rats and mice showed that then when they consumed THC on a regular basis they were much more prone to eat heroin in increasing quantities than those that didnâ??t. This re-enforces the argument of the gateway theory since there were no peer pressure or social factors which were in any way different. Many people which smoked cannabis in their teens were proven to be serious heroin users later in life.
These studies are done on the actual affects of the drug on the body and mind, but there is also the issue of the social affect and the argument that once teenagers start to smoke cannabis, they are then associating with people who take drugs and the peer pressure that comes with that. The argument is that after a while the cannibus will no longer be enough and they will try and find a better high with harder drugs.
One person says that they started smoking cannabis at school at the age of twelve â??It was just to look cool and get in with the boys in the popular group, before I knew it we were bunking off school to smoke and I was spending my pocket money and any money I could get hold of to get stoned. I ended up flunking my exams as I hardly attented school and my concentration was not what it were suppose to be. When I turned 16 I was starting sell cannibus to my friends to pay for my habbit and this made me become involved with a much older group of kids and led to me starting to take harder drugs. Iâ??m now twenty five and have been to prison three times because of drugs which just made me worse as I carried on taking harder drugs inside. My one wish is that I never started smoking cannibus since it caused me to have a record wich makes me have no prospect of any job so I just carry on dealing to get my next high.
Whether kids start smoking cannibus because of peer pressure or just because they are involved with the same kind of kids for most of these kids they are not able to stop and will never stop chasing the next high. A large majority do not stop at just cannabis and lead to harder drugs which have a detrimental affect on them and their lives.

Using Cannabis leads to hard drugs
This is such a tough subject to pick a side on. Imo if people are going to start using drugs of any kind, it is usually cannabis or alcohol.
Once he/she realizes these effects don't seem to seriously alter their life in any serious way (for the most part), the jump to any other kind of intoxicant may not seem as daunting if they hadn't first made that leap to begin with. I feel like the rationalization that "hey, if marijuana didn't seriously mess me up, then I'm sure anything else won't either." The fact that a substance can alter one's state of mind that drastically is in itself a mind opener, and eases someone into something else per say. That, I can buy.
On the other hand, I have known plenty of people who started smoking, and soon gave that up in search of something stronger, with a different effect. It's all about what people are looking for in an intoxicant. If it's not one thing, it's the other. Some people just plain and simple do not want to handle sobriety, and there comes a point in their lives when they accept this to some degree and move down which ever path they chose.
That's my point though. It's all a choice. One can't blame their serious drug addiction on first starting to smoke marijuana, imo. That's a cop out to me. ~
