Re-Potting, necessary?

First off, I've read The Cannabis Grow bible and several other resources cover to cover, but I never hear people talk about this particular subject. Why is it that nobody just starts from the very beginning with a really large pot? Why not start of with a 5 gallon pot and go from there? It seems to me that this would be most efficient, save the most soil, and you don't have to spend money on 5 different sized pots. Is there a reason why having a seedling in a larger pot would be bad? After all, that is surely the most natural way of growing a plant.

it`s done that way because most have a limited space, and unless you are growing clones or breeding , you dont know if it`s gonna be male or female.

If you were to grow from seedling in a large pot, water would eventually begin to rot the soil / medium deep in the middle. The plant or seedling would need water and you would have to water the top of the soil as it dries out faster than the bottom.


The plant can only drink so much so eventually your medium would get water logged and rot away.

Kinda like the same reason you dont buy a child a size 12 sneaker when he needs a size 5, hoping he'll grow into them.

The size doesn't fit.

yes, space is the issue. one can start 2-3x the seeds using 1 gal pots and growing in them until sexed. by then the plant is usually root-bound and the f's can be easily transplanted. the soil should have decent enough drainage that 'soil rot' is not a prob.

LIke notanovice said it's mostly about room. If you have the room then go ahead. As long as the soil drains propley you should be fine.

having the plant go rootbound isn't a bad thing, a nice dense root ball is something that every plant should have.
I repot my plant before flowering. in a slightly larger pot with fresh soil.

Ok, so the real issue here is people might not wanna waste space because a seedling may turn out to be a male. It really doesn't seem like water logging would be an issue if your soil has good drainage. I think I'd rather risk that then having to make a mess/stress the plant by repotting. Also, about the soil you'd be using more soil if you kept increasing the size right? Small pot + 2 gallon + 4 gallon > single 5 gallon pot from the very beginning. I guess you are reusing some of the soil from the pot you are transferring the plant from, but I still think it'd be close if not more soil.

You have the idea now. After this grows you should try Hydro, it's quicker and they grow bigger too.
