If you are new to growing I'd suggest staying away from hydroponics at first especially if you're trying to save money. If you're committed then do it right, rockwool is a great growing medium for hydroponics.
That mini hydro setup will be outgrown quickly by this type of plant species.... Not sure how much water can fit in a 3.5" x 3.5" space but I'm sure it's not going to be enough for a plant that is in full bloom....Quote:

You can get a complete bucket system for about $30. Earth Juice Nutes are not too expensive.
You can start with a drops PH test kit but the best purchase I recently made was a digital PH meter.
I once used dirt from my yard. Nothing special, mostly a weatherd ardith shale with a lot of organics from years of gardens. It worked out pretty good pretty good.
