I am using regular compost is it likely to be any good, i've heard people say that you need perlite in your soil does anyone know what this is and is it easy to get hold of. Thanks for your help.

Perlite is in the soil to make it easier for the roots to move around i think. Usually a lot of soil mediums you buy come with perlite in it (its the white styrophomy type rocks).
Thanks for the help Da1kraziethug can you buy perilite seperatly and add it to your soil.

It's all about soil-less mixes and soil,there's also recipes for manure teas there too. Perlite can be purchased seperately and is just one of the components of a good soilless mix.

u can get perlite at walmart.....i seen some in there the other day...same stuff thats in homedepo and lowes garden dept....prolly cheaper at wally world too...same size bag....peace

miracal grow soil is propably the best i average about 2half to 3oz per plant in miracal grow in very large pots never have used feed
