Hello Again!!! First Grow Log!
To be honest I left this forum for a while b/c of the dysfunction it had been suffering. I have been posting on RIU but I realized today, I started here and went all through the pains of choosing soil/hydro, tent/cab, LED/HID etc etc etc... So after all the whining y'all put up with it did not seem fair to not post my first real grow here.
I finally went with a 36"w x 20"d x 64"h tent from HTG (won that on ebay $106.00 w/shipping!) I went to HTG in person to get the rest of my shtuff. I drove almost 3 hours 1 way but it was well worth it. If you live within a reasonable distance from a store I recommend a trip! I got a 90w tri-band UFO LED, 4 35w 6400k cfls/4 35w 2700k cfls, FF Happy Frog, a bag of Perlite, and Technaflora's recipe for success nutes. Along with all the odds and ends I thought I needed. Total project cost so far including the beans from single seed center (another great suggestion) around $500.00
My girls are 14 days past germination and I am just gonna copy/paste my journalling up to this point.

Germination: I placed the beans in a folded over saturated paper towel, laid in a small plastic sealed container, wrapped in a cloth towel and placed in my kitchen cabinet.

Taylor popped today, but Stefanie has not. I half expected this before I attempted germination. Steffi was quite green and small when she arrived. I have placed them both in 4â? plastic pots (Happy Frog/perlite 3:1). I first saturated my soil mix with about 1 ¼ cup of distilled water with Thrive Alive B-1 solution. I mixed 1 quart distilled water with ¾ tsp. of nutes and soaked the soil. I placed my seeds about ¾â? down in the soil and covered. I placed the potted seeds into my tent under the lights. I plan to let the lights go all night. If Steffi does not pop by Thursday I will begin germination on a new baby.
3/2/2011
No changes to note today. I moistened the soil and covered both pots with plastic bags to hold humidity. I also moved them closer to the cflâ??s and switched off the LED
3/3/2011- day 1
Both girls emerged from the soil today! I watered them with plain distilled water no nutes. I think I am gonna wait until they actually enter veg stage to add more of the technaflora stuff. I am going to continue to research the products first.
3/5/2011-day 2
Things are looking great. I watered the girls today and have decided to start the veg nute mix after 1 more plain watering. I also removed the plastic bags.
3/11/2011- day 8
2 days ago I noticed my babies are already sick. They are turning a yellowish, orangish, and brown color. I posted for advice and talked to Dave. The general consensus from all is I am over watering and in general getting nervously over protective. Last night I cut the discolored parts of Steffi, and tonight I did likewise with Taylor. Last night the soil was quite dry so I flushed it with plain water. I will not be adding any more nutes until I transplant and go into vegging.
I also installed the exhaust fan and ducting tonight. I will not water again until Sunday.
3/13/2011- day 10
I watered the girls last night. They were both quite dry. I cut all the burned and necrotic areas off all the infected leaves. They both have new growth coming in so I know they are still living. I took some new pics today including one of the tent complete with exhaust fan and ductâ?¦
3/14/2011- day 11
The girls felt dry again so I watered tonight, just until I saw moisture out the bottom. I am concerned that the leaves are still showing signs of burn. I am getting mixed ideas by reading the forum. I think it is nute burn but it may be nute lockout or overwatering. I knew there was a good chance my first grow would not be perfect and may even not make it at all. At this point I can only go by what I feel and have learned so far. This is truly a trial and error scenario. I only hope they survive the next 10 days until transplant. I am certainly going to go 50%/50% Happy Frog/perlite.
3/15/2011- day 12
Leaving them alone tonight, must let them dry out tomorrow night as well. I want to see if they start getting the color back.
3/16/2011- day 13
I got some advice on RIU and decided to give it a try. I made a mixture of ¼ tsp of magi-cal to 1 qt of distilled water and sprayed the solution on the top of the soil only. I placed both plants on 1 dinner plate and turned the lights off until I get home from work in about 6.5 hours. When I come home I will only turn on 1 cfl for both plants. The temp in the tent is down to 68 degrees. I put my space heater in front of the closet and left the doors open. Ok, both girls were dry again when I got home. I re-diluted the magi-cal mix with another quart of water and watered them until I saw run off. I also cut off the remaining necrotic leaf sections.
3/17- Day 14
The girls look like they are gonna recover! I clipped the remaining bits of necrotic leafs from both girls last night. The color of both is getting better and there is no more droopiness. It also appears that upward growth is starting again. I am training myself to leave them alone and let them do what God intended them to do. So I have not gone near them all day (except to sneak a peek at them and the temp). Note too self: seedlings do not need more than 1 cfl on them to grow, bottled water needs to have calcium and magnesium added, never add nutes to newly germinated seeds.
Thanks too all who advised! This forum rocks!

Good luck on this grow bkbbudz! I am going to pull up a chair and watch. I love your conclusions at the end of your first post... pretty much the same lessons I had to learn. It never stops it seems. I just learned another lesson today about these dear plants! I figure that someday when I am old and grey I might start getting pretty good at this if I keep hanging around with this crowd. Glad you decided to come back. I wish a few more would also because there are a few that I miss dearly.

Hi BkBudz,
those attachments arent opening unfortunately....
I'm curious to know what the ambient temps are in your grow room? and also how far away are your lights from the tops of the plants?
From those older pics you posted your girls are looking extremely heat stressed...
Hello Again!!! First Grow Log!
Attachment 273513Attachment 273512 Actually, I already took steps to cool things of a bit. I only have 1 cfl on them now. My temp is about 73 degrees farenheit.
Hello Again!!! First Grow Log!
Going to transplant them in 2 days. They have fully recovered from what was ailing them earlier on and, if I do say so myself are looking quite excellent for a first time attempt. I hope you can see the pics this time. Apparently the last attachments did not open? Don't know what I am doing or did wrong.
